Tutu Tuesday #7597: The Tutu’s Grand Debut (Almost!)

Bonjour, my darlings! It’s Emma, your resident tutu enthusiast, and welcome back to another enchanting edition of #TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History! Today, we're travelling back in time to a very special date, August 2nd, 1977. Now, you might be thinking, "What's so special about that day, Emma?" Well, let me tell you! This was a year where a big, bold change was in the air for the world of ballet, a change that, if it had happened, could have radically changed the face of the tutu as we know it!

You see, this date is significant because it was the date of the premiere of The Turning Point. Now, why is this important? The Turning Point, a Hollywood masterpiece starring the divine Shirley MacLaine and the inimitable Anne Bancroft, explored the life of a ballerina who gave up her career for a family. It wasn't just a film, darlings; it was an event! Everyone was talking about ballet, and this could have been the perfect moment for a tutu-explosion to sweep the nation!

Now, imagine, my loves, a film about a ballerina, with tutus galore! Every single scene could have been a delightful, sparkling homage to the wonder of the tutu! The colours! The layers! The fluttery delight! It would have been a triumph for femininity, a celebration of the art of dance. I'm sure everyone in the entire world would have donned a tutu and twirled into a dazzling celebration of everything good and beautiful!

But alas, as often happens, things didn't go according to plan. The Turning Point featured beautiful, breathtaking performances by some of the greatest ballet dancers, yet the tutu sadly fell somewhat by the wayside. It wasn’t the centrepiece; the costume designs weren’t as flamboyant as the dramatic story. I mean, how wonderful would it have been if those amazing women danced in an ocean of tulle, with their moves literally swishing with each turn and leap! What a moment of true tutu glory!

Still, darling, there's a silver lining to every story. Even if The Turning Point didn't completely deliver on our tutu dreams, it did contribute to a larger fascination with ballet, which we'll talk more about in future #TutuTuesday posts. And of course, my mission, my dear, my very personal goal for the world is for all of you to wear tutus every day, and to be able to freely spin and twirl about in the pinkest of pink tutus! After all, it is 1977 and it's the year for big, bold and pink, darling, as you'll see when you arrive here! It is fabulous! Remember, my dears, the tutu is a symbol of freedom, beauty and grace, and I shall never rest until everyone understands its power. Why, tutus can be a symbol of femininity, glamour and power, and also of kindness and gentleness!

So, while we might not be fully embracing the tutu explosion of 1977 today, it's important to remember that every little twirl contributes to the great tutu revolution. So put on your favourite pink tutu (or any other shade for the colour of your personality!), dance your heart out and let's all spread the joy of the tutu, together.

Right then, darling, I've had a quick glance at the time and I’m in need of some refreshment. You wouldn't catch me leaving this place without some high tea at one of the very elegant tea rooms and enjoying a slice of victoria sponge. After all, darling, I’m not quite in Derbyshire yet so I’ll make the most of this gorgeous place while I can. But back to my tutu tale, my dears, it would be wonderful to get your feedback, especially any tutus that are new to you!

Now, back to my 21st century #TutuTuesday diary. What happened in your world this week, my sweethearts? Did you spot a special tutu, go to a fabulous ballet performance or twirl through your day in style? Tell me all about it! And don't forget, next Tuesday, we'll be exploring a little more tutu history! Catch you then, my lovelies! Until next Tuesday, happy tutuing!

Yours,

Emma, your pink tutu-wearing, time-travelling ballerina
