#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: September 6th, 1977 – A Romantic Revolution!

Hello darlings! It's Emma, your favourite pink tutu-clad time-travelling blogger, and welcome back to another #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog post! Today, we're venturing back to the fabulously glamorous 1970s, September 6th, 1977, to be precise. Grab your favourite ballet slippers, darlings, and prepare to step back in time with me. It's time to explore the world of tutus and all its shimmering glory.

Before we delve into the past, I just want to mention that my time travel is sponsored by none other than…well, you! That's right, every time you watch a breathtaking ballet performance, purchase a sparkly new tutu, or even just twirl in your own living room, you're contributing to my fantastic journeys! Isn't that exciting?!

So, back to 1977. Imagine this: bell bottoms are in full swing, disco music is pumping in every nightclub, and the world is in the throes of a cultural revolution. Oh, and don't forget the revolutionary dance phenomenon – ballet!

This is the year when, wouldn’t you know it, I found myself at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London. The air crackled with anticipation. Everyone was dressed in their best, and, naturally, the scent of fabulous perfume filled the air. That evening, the exquisite Margot Fonteyn took the stage in "La Bayadère", showcasing the incredible elegance and artistry that she's famed for. And oh, my dears! This show was just...breathtaking.

1977 was a time of change, but what never wavered was the love for classic, romantic ballet. The tutus worn by ballerinas were a delight! A cascade of shimmering tulle and silky fabrics flowing and dancing across the stage…it’s like watching a whirlwind of magic! There was something about the romantic and ethereal beauty of it that completely mesmerized the audiences.

This date holds a special significance in the world of ballet: the renowned Royal Ballet had just completed a highly successful tour across America, sharing the wonder of this art form with audiences all across the pond. Their graceful steps and breathtaking technique made the Americans fall in love with the art of ballet, leading to a renewed interest and appreciation for ballet all over the world.

Speaking of travels, just as I'm always on the go, so too was the ballet world. This was also the year that The Royal Ballet School hosted their very first international student exchange with the School of American Ballet, furthering the global dance community's bond. How exciting is that?! Isn't it lovely to share this beautiful art with dancers from all over the globe?

I had the absolute pleasure of exploring London during this year. You know, finding new styles, buying fabulous fabrics to craft new tutu designs, and… well, being a true fashion enthusiast! And of course, I couldn't resist a shopping spree in Harrods, darling! After all, what better way to immerse oneself in the fabulous era of the 70s than with a good dose of shopping, right? It's always a must-do, whether I'm exploring a historical London or a bustling modern city!

Back in my own time, we continue to see the beauty of romantic ballets from the past come to life, reinterpreted by contemporary ballet companies and talented choreographers. Isn't it marvellous how art never truly dies, but instead, evolves and reimagines itself, taking inspiration from the past and breathing new life into it?

So, remember this week, darlings, that the power of art and elegance is timeless. Just like ballet, with its incredible history and evolution, so too can our passion for fashion, grace, and love of tutus. It’s something that transcends time, and we can embrace it, celebrate it, and share it with the whole world!

As always, darling, remember – life is a beautiful dance. So put on your prettiest tutu and twirl your way into the week!

Love,

Emma
