Tutu Tuesday: #7633 - The 70s! A Time for Flare and Frills

Hey everyone! Emma here, your trusty tutu-clad time traveller, back with another Tutu Tuesday blog post from www.pink-tutu.com. Today we're taking a trip back in time, back to the dazzling decade of the 1970s! Think platform shoes, bell bottoms, and yes, you guessed it - tutus!

Now, when we think of the 70s in fashion, the word 'disco' often comes to mind. Think of the Bee Gees, the vibrant colours, the dancing, and that iconic style! And of course, dancing requires costumes, and let's be honest, what's more fabulous than a tutu?

Today, we're going to delve into the history of tutus in this wild and wonderful era. Picture a bustling scene, perhaps New York City, Paris, or London, as we hop off a comfy, plush train in a perfectly coordinated pink dress and our favourite ballerina-length pink tutu.

From Stage to Street: The Rise of the Tutu

While ballet had its own traditions of elaborate tutus throughout the early 20th century, the 70s saw a change - the tutu stepped off the stage and into the street!

It started with the fashion designers. People like Yves Saint Laurent were playing with different takes on traditional ballet looks. They created bold, statement-making silhouettes inspired by dance, and guess what - a lot of those looks featured tutus! Think fluffy layers, dramatic tulle, and lots and lots of pink!

And then, the world of ballet itself began changing!

Ballet performances started to push the boundaries. The traditional tutus, the ones we know with their fluffy multi-layers, were being mixed with more experimental styles. You started seeing shorter tutus, even little ones, in sleek, minimalist designs. It was all about individuality and breaking free from tradition.

For the ballet-obsessed, this was truly a thrilling time!

Imagine, everyone was talking about the "new look" for tutus! In a magazine that was on my coffee table this morning (found in the 1978 section of the time travel department, obviously), the headline screamed "Tutu-ing Up!"

The beauty of this era is that the tutu didn't need to be the star of the show! It was about how it was styled! A casual pink tutu paired with an oversized sweater or a flowing blouse made an effortless statement, and a bold pink tutu over a sequin top with a blazer - well, that just radiated disco vibes!

It wasn't just the designers though. People like David Bowie, who are synonymous with the 70s and are legendary for pushing boundaries in music and fashion, helped bring the tutu into the public eye.

And who could forget the rise of disco and the rise of disco queens? Gloria Gaynor, Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, KC and The Sunshine Band, you name it! The disco stage was another platform for the tutu, and they embraced it with open arms (and glamorous, leg-baring jumpsuits!).

What About Today?

As for today, the 70s style tutus have made a major comeback, especially with a lot of ballet street wear! It's amazing, so fun to see how the old tutus blend with contemporary pieces. Iโ€™ve been spotting loads of these tutus on Instagram, on Pinterest, and even on street style blogs! People are using them in cool new ways and incorporating them into everyday outfits - even while dancing!

You can find a ton of different tutu styles, whether it's a short tutu for that minimalist look or a full, fluffy one for something bold. The best part is - it's totally your call on how to wear it! The 70s showed us that anything is possible when it comes to fashion, and even a humble tutu can be the statement piece of the day.

I even saw this fabulous tutu, like a mini skirt-tutu in pink tulle! It looked perfect with black tights, an oversized pink knit sweater, and my favourite ballerina pumps. The perfect way to show that a little touch of dance can be worn everywhere. I am definitely bringing that one home with me. A tutu for everyday life, yes please!

What are YOU waiting for? Grab that tutu (maybe a pink one, if I may suggest!), play with your style, and embrace the freedom that the 70s and their iconic fashion instilled in us! And remember, a pink tutu can always bring a little more sparkle to any day!

Let's dance!

Yours in tulle, Emma x
