Tutu Tuesday #7653: A Whirl Through the 70s with My Pink Tutu!
Hello, darling tutu-lovers! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood ballerina blogger, and today, it's time for a little time travel on #TutuTuesday! My fabulous pink tutu is taking me back to August 29th, 1978, to the bustling streets of London. Can you imagine a time when you couldn't just Google a "1970s tutu" in an instant?!
Now, I know some of you might think tutus were just a "princess ballerina" thing in the 70s, but oh honey, that's just the tip of the iceberg! The 70s were a truly fabulous era for the tutu. Think flared pants, disco fever, and…well, tutus! They were everywhere.
Let's take a quick trip through the streets of 1978 London, shall we?
Imagine you're stepping out of the Tube, onto bustling Oxford Street. A whiff of freshly-baked bread and a cacophony of sounds hits you – music playing from shops, the constant patter of Londoners dashing about. You spot a department store window display overflowing with brightly coloured fashion: flowing skirts, patterned dresses, and yes, even a stunning pink tutu.
But that's not all, dear readers! If you happen to stumble upon the iconic Covent Garden, you might just catch a performance of Swan Lake, a ballet so iconic that even today, a hundred years on, it continues to fill audiences with wonder! The Swan Queen’s ethereal white tutus, her grace and elegance – a true visual feast for the eyes, and a timeless inspiration for my beloved pink tutu.
What makes 1978 extra special is that on this date, an enchanting ballet production titled The Nutcracker opens its doors in London. Can you imagine? A story full of magic, dreams, and of course, some truly gorgeous tutus! It makes me wish I could have been there, seeing the magical tutus twinkle under the theatre lights.
And talking about twinkle – the 70s brought us a unique kind of “tutu twist” with the rise of disco. While it’s true you wouldn’t find actual tutus on the dance floors (mostly flared trousers and sparkly tops!), it's amazing to see how the vibrant energy and flamboyant spirit of disco, embraced the tutu as an expression of individuality and sheer fun!
As a Derbyshire girl, I also find it fascinating how even my own little part of the world played a part in the 70s tutu scene. Think about the Derwent Valley Mills and the legacy of textile creation that ran through the region. Even if not all tutus were directly made there, that dedication to beautiful fabric, the very soul of my pink tutu, had a far-reaching influence!
Now, back to the 21st century! It's great to see the tutu becoming even more versatile and accepted in fashion. We see tutu influences on skirts, dresses, even jewelry. We can’t leave out the stunning ballerina looks we see at red carpet events! That beautiful merging of elegance, artistry, and fun – the legacy of those fabulous tutus from 1978.
Oh, and darling, just in case you missed it, August 29th marks International Day of the Book. That means two fantastic things: first, we can enjoy amazing stories, and second, more opportunities to spread joy and inspiration, just like my tutu does every week.
But it's not just about wearing tutus, darling. It’s about that feeling – the feeling that makes you twirl and feel like you can do anything! It’s the feeling that gives you confidence, that tells you you can create anything, explore any time, and just be the best, most dazzling version of yourself.
Remember, the world is your stage! And I can’t wait to see you rock your own version of a tutu moment!
Till next Tuesday, stay stylish and embrace your inner tutu-wearing self!
With love and twirls,
Emma
