#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Time! (Post #7709)
Hello lovelies! 🩰 It's your favourite tutu-clad time-traveller Emma here, back with another instalment of #TutuTuesday! This week, we're taking a trip back to 25th September, 1979. Oh my, where to even begin! Buckle up, darlings, because this era was a whirlwind of colour, creativity, and a whole lot of tulle!
From my little time-travelling train compartment (pink, of course, with a matching tulle curtain!), I can already see the incredible dance energy of the 70s radiating outwards. The decade saw the rise of ballet street, those magical gatherings in public spaces where people danced freely. Think Trafalgar Square, full of joyful dancers twirling in the afternoon sunshine, a kaleidoscope of colour and joyous movement. I'd love to grab my tutu and join in!
Now, 1979 is particularly significant in the story of tutus. Think Giselle. That dreamy classic! Well, the ballet, as we know it, received a very special makeover by choreographer, Marcia Haydee, that very year. She injected fresh energy into the iconic choreography, breathing life into this timeless tale of love and heartbreak. This reinvention helped to catapult Giselle to new heights of popularity. Imagine the roar of the crowd, the shimmering lights, and the graceful elegance of the dancers! It must have been breathtaking!
My favourite part? The costumes, of course! This era brought back romanticism in tutus, long, billowing, and made from sheer tulle. Talk about a beautiful explosion of feminine beauty! This new approach emphasised flow and fluidity, drawing on the romance and expressive nature of ballet. It wasn't all tutus, of course! But even the more modern styles with tight leggings and leotards had a playful, vibrant feel. The whole world was embracing a new sense of free expression!
To get in the spirit of 70s fashion, why not pull out your favourite sparkly top, or perhaps some bell-bottoms, and pair them with a totally fabulous pink tutu? Go for a vibrant hue, a contrasting sash, and maybe a head-turning statement necklace! Oh, how I would love to go shopping in a vintage clothing store on that very day! There must be incredible bargains to be had! Imagine a pink, lace-trimmed tutu just begging to be twirled. You can’t tell me I'd be alone on a shopping spree! I'm sure some fabulous soul out there will want to join me on this imaginary 1979 fashion adventure.
But what’s happening on this particular date, you ask? Well, hold onto your headbands, dear reader! We have a major dance performance coming up! On 25th September 1979, the Royal Ballet were set to perform their incredible take on Giselle at London’s beloved Royal Opera House! Isn't that amazing? Imagine seeing this performance! What I wouldn’t give to sit front row in a fabulous dress and witness the magical ballet unfolding right in front of my very eyes. To hear the orchestra play, feel the passion and emotion pouring from the stage, and to marvel at the graceful leaps and twirls... This is a dream I would love to experience firsthand!
Perhaps there are some of you out there who saw this production? Let me know your memories! Share your thoughts on this amazing time, where dance and fashion came together to create a symphony of joy and elegance. I'm all ears, darlings! Let’s continue to inspire the magic and enchantment of this decade. Because let’s face it, a little twirl with your favourite pink tutu goes a long way, no matter what year we find ourselves in!
Remember, it's not about the date on the calendar, it's about the magic and wonder that we can find within ourselves and share with the world. So, go forth, darlings, embrace the joy of dance and, most importantly, always wear a pink tutu! 💖
Lots of love, Emma x
