#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1980-02-26 - A Whirl Through Time!

Hello lovelies! Emma here, back with another blast from the past for #TutuTuesday! Today we’re venturing back to 1980-02-26 – can you believe it’s been almost 44 years?! It’s a Tuesday, of course, because I always save my historical tutu time-travel trips for the best day of the week. 🩰

Today’s destination is a truly magical place – London! The very heart of ballet, where I'm currently living the dream as a full-time tutu enthusiast (more on that later). Oh, I'm loving it! Just last night, I took in a captivating performance by the Royal Ballet. They danced "Swan Lake" – such elegance, such passion. Those tutus were simply exquisite! A real inspiration for a pink tutu loving girl, that's for sure. I especially loved the swans' white tutus – like feathers floating on the breeze. 🦢

But let's talk about fashion, darling! Now, 1980 was a fabulous time to be in London, especially for a girl with an eye for style. It was the dawn of the "New Romanticism" movement, all billowing sleeves, ruffles, and lace. Oh, it just screams "tutu!"

Just picture it – puffed up sleeves that rival a ballerina's graceful movements, frilly blouses that make me want to pirouette right through the streets, and skirts so full they make every step feel like a waltz! It's practically a fairytale, and it’s just the kind of world I adore! You can see why this is my favourite era!

Speaking of a fairytale, let’s not forget what we’re here for – the ballet tutus of 1980! They are absolutely stunning! Think lavish fabrics, detailed stitching, and colours that shimmer under the stage lights. And then, there's the sheer beauty of the silhouette - they truly captured the graceful elegance of the female form. They may not have been the voluminous, ultra-pink tutus of my dreams (let's face it, those wouldn't quite fit into the "New Romanticism" aesthetic, but a little pink tutu love can work its magic even in 1980!

On This Very Day:

1980-02-26 saw a performance by the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden. It wasn't a ballet I caught – I'd love to tell you it was the legendary "Sleeping Beauty", or something with a beautiful pink tutu moment. Alas, I can’t time travel with such specificity, I just arrive in a year! 🤫 My ability is much more fun that way! The good news? I get to see my fave shows, the great shopping, and all that glamorous excitement! It’s been incredible. If I win the lottery, this place is so much on the travel bucket list. But who am I kidding? A big girl's got to travel light – so the best part? My trusty, favourite, beautiful, pink tutu travels with me. Isn’t that dreamy?

Anyway, 1980-02-26 may not be notable for any single performance but it's important to remember this is just a single snapshot. This was a time of great artistry, of talented ballerinas perfecting their craft, and the birth of incredible dance trends.

But it wouldn't be #TutuTuesday without some fabulous tidbits! This is post number 7731 – that's 7731 tutus and counting! Oh my word! Don’t worry I’ll keep you updated on this special milestone as we near 10000. That’s almost as important as reaching one million visitors on the pink-tutu.com website.

As we move through time, let's never forget that each era in dance, in fashion, has something beautiful to offer. Oh! And remember, darling, don't be afraid to embrace your inner ballerina – even if it means rocking a pink tutu while walking down the street. You never know who you might inspire to twirl with you!

Until next week, darlings!

XOXO, Emma
