#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1980-04-08 - A Journey Back in Time, Part 7737!
Hello my darlings! Emma here, back from another whirlwind journey through time, and guess what? Today's #TutuTuesday is extra special, as we're going way, way back to the glorious 80s! I must say, even I, a self-proclaimed time travel tutu aficionado, was a bit shocked to discover how much tutus have changed over the decades. Buckle up, you fabulous fairies, because this journey is going to be one for the books.
**(Itās actually 8am on a Tuesday, and Iām currently sipping my chamomile tea, which helps me get through the time travelling process.)
As usual, it's my time travel tutu and me that are taking this leap, all for the sake of historical ballet knowledge. So here we are, landing in London, oh how I love London, all cobblestones, charming cafes, and the intoxicating buzz of the theatre scene. Oh, the history here just screams for a new ballet! Speaking of history, did you know that London's Royal Opera House had been in existence since the 1700s? Think about that! That's practically a tutu timeline!
As for 1980 itself, this was a particularly magical year. For you budding tutu lovers out there, a special mention for the New York City Ballet's 'Nutcracker,' which boasted incredible tutus designed by Barbara Karinska - truly a tutu legend in her time. It's hard not to get swept away by the exquisite designs of her tulle masterpieces - a sight for sore eyes indeed.
Of course, there was plenty going on on this specific day, the 8th of April. In the ballet world, The Royal Ballet had a double header. The first being Kenneth MacMillan's masterful "Manon." Oh how I would have loved to see it then, itās so intricate, with amazing scenes of ballet and characterisation, a real ballet loversā delight. And in the second performance they presented āThe Four Temperaments.ā Such passion! Such artistry! Honestly, Iām transported back to 1980 just thinking about it!
Hereās a tip: for a fabulous time, hop onto a train. Thatās the perfect way to enjoy the sights and sounds of the period. Speaking of fashionā¦ letās talk tutus!
Of course, I had to try out a few vintage finds while I was there! The style, oh my dear, what a dreamy time for tutus! Full, bouncy, and just bursting with colour and embellishments! Think huge tulle clouds and bows aplenty, with an absolute abundance of shimmer. This period saw some real innovations, with the rise of Lycra making tutu construction way more exciting. It meant that the fabrics could become lighter and airier - like ballet fairies flitting on a summer breeze!
I have a sneaking suspicion you may be seeing these 1980s-style tutus resurface on the runways in the near future, because it's a style that always stays with us. And, hey, you can certainly find something in your grandma's attic! Vintage, unique, and so wonderfully dramatic ā Iām not saying you need to go full 80s, just maybe take a bit of inspiration, add some fun frills and ruffles to your modern style!
Donāt forget - your Tutu is a way to express yourself. So embrace it, dance it, and rock it!
Love, Emma x
