Tutu Tuesday #7752: Twirling Back to the 70s! 🩰
Hello my lovelies! It's Emma here, back with another fabulously pink #TutuTuesday, and this week, we're stepping back in time to the fabulous 70s! Oh, the era of disco balls, bell bottoms, and bold colours - and guess what, tutus were in the mix too! 🎉
As you know, my quest is to make pink tutus a global phenomenon, and today, I’m taking you all on a glamorous trip back to July 22nd, 1980, to show you how the humble tutu was shining bright in the cultural landscape.
Let's hop onto the London Underground, because that's where I'm starting my adventure! Today, I'm feeling particularly spirited and wearing my most voluminous, bright pink tutu - I mean, if we're talking 70s, you've got to embrace the drama! It’s like a fluffy pink cloud swirling around me as I wander through Covent Garden, checking out all the delightful shops. This time capsule of the 70s feels utterly amazing – think floral patterns, chunky platforms, and more denim than you can shake a sequinned handbag at!
You know what’s even more fabulous than browsing the boutiques? Seeing a ballet performance, naturally! Today’s performance is at the Royal Opera House. Ballet is practically royalty in London, so the excitement is tangible as I walk towards the majestic building, surrounded by excited whispers and swishing silk. The audience is a dazzling sea of beautiful gowns and sharp suits, all eagerly awaiting the spectacle to begin. And speaking of spectacle, today's show is 'The Sleeping Beauty'. This beautiful ballet is one of my all-time favourites, and it feels especially exciting watching it on its anniversary performance in 1980, with the original designs!
The first act is a dream, with the tutus of the court ladies looking magnificent – those swirling layers of white and pale pink fabric are everything! And let's not forget the ballerina dancing the lead! It's a showstopping performance, leaving the audience enthralled and enchanted!
But the fun doesn’t end there! I must confess that the best part of these time trips, apart from the tutus and performances, is the food! So, after the show, I head straight to one of London's finest cafes for a decadent tea and cake. Now, while afternoon tea was definitely a thing in the 70s, I do like to take inspiration from my 21st-century fashion sensibilities and order a vibrant pink raspberry éclair – because you can't go wrong with a little bit of colour, especially on a #TutuTuesday.
So, what do I make of the 70s? It’s certainly a period where bold colours and a passion for flamboyant fashion really stood out. But the thing is, the tutu’s journey from a classical ballet garment to something universally admired is something I still see in fashion today, and it makes me oh so happy! If you see me at a ballet show or theatre, say hi - I promise, you'll spot my big pink tutu, glowing brightly. I'm not just a ballerina, I’m an ambassador for the joy of dancing in style!
And don't forget, next Tuesday, I'll be taking you to another magical time and place with another installment of #TutuTuesday. Until then, keep twirling and let's make every day feel as fabulous as a pink tutu day! 💖
