Tutu Tuesday #7761: A Blast From The Past!

Hello, darling tutu lovers! It's your favourite pink-tutu-clad blogger, Emma, back for another fabulous Tutu Tuesday! Today we're taking a whirlwind trip through time, back to 23rd September 1980! I know what you're thinking: tutus in the eighties? Absolutely!

Before we dive into the glittery world of tutus, I've just got to tell you about my incredible trip to Paris! The city of lights truly lives up to its name! I saw a performance of Swan Lake at the Palais Garnier - the costumes were divine, darling, especially the black swan's dramatic feather ensemble. The ballerinas were just exquisite - they seemed to float on air, like feathers themselves! Oh, and the shopping! It was heaven. I even found a pink beret to complete my ensemble, which I have to show you later!

Speaking of pinkā€¦ my heart melted the moment I stepped onto the train. Remember that time I told you about my grand vision of getting everyone in pink tutus? Well, on this trip, my dream seemed a little closer. A group of beautiful young ladies in pink tulle skirts swooned my way onto the carriage! Imagine my delight, my dear readers! I almost danced down the aisle, but a tutu in a train carriage is, let's say, interestingā€¦ especially if you happen to bump into someone!

Okay, back to our blast from the past! 1980! Think disco, think big hair, think leg warmersā€¦ but you'd be surprised! The tutus of the 1980s were not necessarily as, shall we say, ā€œflamboyantā€ as they are now! While big, bouffant tutus were still popular in ballet performances, the fashion world was embracing newer interpretations!

So, what were those "newer" interpretations? Think tutu-inspired pieces! Designers were daringly using tulle in everyday wear ā€“ it was showing up on evening dresses, on skirts, and even in casual, daytime looks! Imagine it ā€“ you're strolling down the street, feeling super chic in a flowing tulle skirt, maybe with a knitted jumper and a leather jacket!

Think it sounds odd? Well, it wasn't at all, my dears! Think Madonna in Material Girl. Or Cyndi Lauper in all her crazy, glamorous glory. These ladies (and many more) were bringing a tutu-licious touch to pop culture ā€“ a perfect blend of whimsical and modern. Itā€™s fascinating how these trends come and go, isnā€™t it?

And on this 23rd September 1980, what was happening that made this date so special?

Well, my lovely readers, on this dateā€¦ we've got huge news in the world of fashion! Guess what, darlings, a brand-new fashion magazine hit the stands ā€“ Marie Claire! Yes, this magazine revolutionised fashion writing, pushing the boundaries with bold layouts and new trends. Think a little less about strict rules, a little more about individual style ā€“ perfect for our tutu world, wouldnā€™t you say?

But that wasn't all! There were two brilliant actresses who were born on this day, and just had to be mentioned. Can you believe that two incredible talents were born on this special day?! The one and only Robin Wright was born this day! If you've ever seen The Princess Bride (a must-see for any tutu enthusiast, by the way!) youā€™ll understand just how amazing this talented actress is.

And also born on the 23rd of September 1980 ā€“ the wonderful Kristin Chenoweth, a petite but powerful voice of the stage and screen!

And last but definitely not least, on this very same day in 1980 ā€“ my own Derbyshire was basking in the spotlight! My hometown was celebrating its own unique event! Remember that gorgeous Derbyshire Folk Museum I took you to last week? They were holding a grand "Vintage Dress Show"! Can you imagine all the vintage delights, the tutu-esque outfits, the stories hidden in those wonderful fabrics? Just imagine the historical treasuresā€¦ it makes me want to jump in the time machine and transport myself there right now!

And you know what? My time-traveling adventure inspires me more every single week to take tutus into the future, to explore how this elegant symbol can be celebrated in new, daring ways!

You know what else inspires me? Reading all your brilliant comments and suggestions on our blog! I adore hearing what you think about tutu history, your ideas for future posts, and of course ā€“ your own fabulous tutu-moments!

Stay tutu-fied, my darlings, and Iā€™ll catch you next week for another exciting #TutuTuesday!

Much love,

Emma xx
