TutuTuesday #7764: A Twirl Back in Time!
Hello my darlings!
It’s Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina, and today's #TutuTuesday is taking us on a whirlwind adventure back to 14th October 1980, right into the heart of ballet’s glittering history. Buckle up, because this journey is full of sparkles, tulle, and oodles of pirouettes.
First off, a quick note about where we're dancing this week: Today we find ourselves in New York City, the undisputed capital of ballet in the 80s! It’s bursting with dazzling Broadway shows, prestigious dance schools, and, of course, the iconic New York City Ballet, which is truly the place to be for any tutu-loving soul.
Now, on to the real reason you’re all here - the fascinating story of tutus in 1980. Let’s be honest, a tutu back then wasn’t simply an ethereal, swishy piece of costume. It was a symbol. It whispered of dreams, artistry, and an intoxicating yearning for something just beyond reach.
I love those 80s tutus, and you know what? I’ve got a feeling a little bit of their magic has filtered into our modern day styles! Remember those impossibly puffy skirts, just bursting with volume? They were everywhere then, on both the stage and the streets. The iconic 80s tutus weren’t all just frilly, fluffy dreams, though - there was a kind of power in their femininity. They demanded to be seen and admired, to be noticed and cherished, and boy oh boy, they definitely succeeded.
Today, however, we’re not just swooning over vintage tutus – we’re celebrating 14th October 1980, so let’s see what else was happening on this special date. I can see my dear friends in the States celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month - a chance to acknowledge the rich heritage and achievements of the Hispanic community! How utterly fabulous. And in the world of ballet… ah, this is where it gets exciting!
This is the year the legendary Rudolf Nureyev brought the magic of dance to the world, not on a stage, but on TV! Imagine: the world at his feet, captivated by his talent and skill. Talk about reaching the masses, it doesn’t get more extravagant than that, and with that much extravaganza, tutus are bound to have taken centre stage.
But speaking of taking centre stage, who's dancing with the most exquisite tutus in New York tonight? This is where I truly get lost in the wonder of it all – it’s ballet season, so naturally, the most fabulous tutus are being worn by the incredible dancers of the New York City Ballet, making every move graceful, ethereal and absolutely extra! I’m pretty sure I even hear a whisper of "Giselle", or maybe “Swan Lake" coming from the stage. Oh, and can you imagine? My absolute favourite, "La Bayadère," premiered in the early 20th century – imagine the tutus then! Now those would be a sight to behold!
Of course, no #TutuTuesday is complete without some totally fabulous fashion tips. Think bright colours and lots of tulle - we’re talking oversized pouffy tutus, skirts so grand they'd make a fairy blush, and just a hint of vintage elegance. The 80s had some serious fashion inspiration, and we’re totally digging it!
But remember, dear friends, the most important thing is to wear a tutu with confidence! Let it swirl and twirl and embrace every moment with the same joyful spirit as a ballerina in the heart of New York City.
And, you know what else makes this journey to 14th October 1980 truly special? A quick train journey is all it takes! Just think – we’re hopping aboard a sleek locomotive, gliding through the scenery and experiencing history from a whole new angle.
So, to sum it all up, today on #TutuTuesday, we've embraced the glorious past of ballet tutus, celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month, and danced through time. *Who's ready for some twirling? * Don't forget to keep your eyes peeled for tutus at every turn and remember – everyone deserves a pink tutu! Until next Tuesday, darlings.
Yours in pink, Emma
