Tutu Tuesday #7786: A Whirl Through the 1980s!
Hello darlings! Emma here, your very own pink tutu-clad time traveler, ready to whisk you away on another journey through the wonderful world of ballet! This week, we're heading back to the dazzling decade of the 1980s!
Now, let's get the tulle swirling! It's 17th March, 1981 - can you imagine a world without the internet or even mobile phones?! It feels like a lifetime ago, but oh my, how fashion has changed!
For today's Tutu Tuesday, let's get a bit nostalgic for this fabulous decade of shoulder pads, leggings, and leg warmers! Remember the neon colours? The bright bold patterns? And yes, even the infamous big hair, and we're not talking the little pouf at the back either! (Thankfully, most ballerinas stuck to the classic bun).
Dancing With the Stars of the 80s
Speaking of ballerinas, this era was all about the rise of the "superstars". Ballet was finally reaching mainstream fame. The glorious Mikhail Baryshnikov graced the stages of the world with his astonishing athleticism and undeniable charisma. Margot Fonteyn, a true legend, continued to enchant audiences with her elegant grace and timeless beauty. And let's not forget the captivating Natalia Makarova, who combined technical prowess with incredible stage presence.
Did you know that, on the 17th March 1981, a remarkable performance happened in the prestigious Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow? The legendary dancer Vladimir Vasiliev, with his dynamic leaps and powerful technique, took to the stage in a fiery rendition of "Don Quixote" โ a classic that never goes out of style. I can only imagine the atmosphere โ it must have been electrifying!
Fashion Spotlight: A Tutu Take on the 80s
What's a dance history blog without a fashion discussion? This era saw tutus in an array of bold colors and innovative shapes, influenced by the trends of the time. Think vibrant colours like fuchsia, emerald, and electric blue, and don't forget the shimmering metallic fabrics that captured the 80s disco energy. Designers experimented with voluminous tutus with frills and tiers, a bit more exaggerated than the traditional ballet styles.
Speaking of colours, pink remains my favourite. Even today, you can find pink tutus in every shade, from baby pink to hot pink, perfect for capturing the vibrant 80s spirit! But don't worry, my dear readers, we won't be wearing the leg warmers over our tutus (although, they do offer extra warmth on cold train journeys!), but embrace the bold spirit! A splash of vibrant colour is a fantastic way to add that touch of personality to a timeless look.
Traveling Through Time (And Tutuland!)
Speaking of journeys, you know me, always ready to travel! My time travel machine just landed me at the Royal Opera House in London - oh how I adore this magnificent building, a theatre haven! It's a ballet lover's paradise, and for me, it's always filled with inspiration! Today, I'm here to watch the final performance of the season for the Royal Ballet โ "Swan Lake" in all its timeless beauty. I'll be there in the front row, fully kitted out in my latest pink tulle confection. My own private little fairytale, right there in the centre of London!
My Tutu Tale for Today
Thereโs something absolutely magical about this era. You know how much I love discovering the stories behind each tulle masterpiece, the secrets of the stage, the history of our beloved dance! From the powerful leaps of Mikhail Baryshnikov to the exquisite grace of Margot Fonteyn, these icons forever changed the ballet world. Their dedication, talent, and passion continue to inspire future generations.
Remember darlings, whether it's a sparkly pink tutu from the 80s, or a classic white creation, we can always celebrate the artistry and magic of ballet! And who knows, maybe a little touch of the 80s glamour is just the right spark for your next tutu outing. After all, sometimes all it takes is a bit of fun and imagination to unleash our inner ballerinas!
Stay twirling and be sure to join me next Tuesday for another thrilling #TutuTuesday! Until then, keep it fab, my dear friends, and never forget, the world is your stage!
XOXO Emma
