#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: May 19th, 1981: A Blast From The Past!

Post Number 7795

Hello, my fellow tutu lovers! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina blogger Emma, here with another exciting delve into the enchanting history of tutus. Buckle up, darlings, as we hop on the historical train to 19th May, 1981, and a day that shook the world of dance!

As ever, I’ve popped my most delightful pink tutu on, and let me tell you, darling, this one has all the frills!

Well, what was everyone doing on 19th May, 1981? Why, if you’re a tutu-enthusiast like me, you were no doubt glued to your television, watching the grand spectacle that was the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.

We’re all aware of the sheer magnitude of this event. It transcended a simple marriage – it was a cultural phenomenon that, like a magical pirouette, captured the hearts and imaginations of the whole world.

As for tutus, you ask? You won’t believe the flurry of frills and feathers that the wedding day itself brought forth! It was a true sartorial ballet. From the Princess’s magnificent, timeless ivory silk gown and the exquisite floral headdress, to the elegant and stylish outfits of the guests, there wasn't a plain skirt or trousers in sight!

However, for us tutu enthusiasts, the highlight, of course, had to be the elegant outfits of the bridesmaids, each resplendent in a fairytale-like confection of ivory and white silk taffeta, crafted by the iconic David and Elizabeth Emanuel.

Can you imagine, darling, a ballet dress fit for a royal wedding?! It wasn’t exactly a traditional tutu as such, but there was no mistaking the enchanting fairy-like quality that swirled around them, like a gentle waltz on the big day.

That same captivating, ethereal quality – a little like the sheer magic that the ballerina of The Sleeping Beauty evokes – it is the very essence of what a tutu represents: grace, elegance, joy, and dream-like beauty.

This royal wedding, my dears, was a shining example of how the tutu, in all its forms, could embody a momentous occasion.

Now, as ever, I do love to mix up my dance history with some of my own sartorial musings, because fashion, in my opinion, should always have a strong theatrical element!

So, darling, you know, if you're dreaming of finding the perfect vintage wedding tutu for yourself, just think what the wedding dress of the 1980s might do to elevate the look! Just be sure to do it the right way – imagine a ballerina twirling around with her lovely white tutu and perhaps a very lovely vintage veil and tiara to set the tone!

You know how much I adore exploring different periods and tutus and of course, no time travelling blog post on fashion and tutus could end without some tips for my fellow fashion-forward fairies.

A true, quintessential classic in ballet fashion is the "romantic tutu" – those wispy layers of tulle that create an ethereal, magical effect. I find these are best when teamed with a fitted, elegant bodice – something romantic and vintage – to complete the look.

But the magic of 1981 is all around us!

From our high-waisted, gathered skirts to the elegant silk sashes, the era had a strong sense of dramatic and theatrical style, especially in our iconic “Power Dressing”. So remember this and never be afraid to be dramatic, stylish, and utterly fabulous – that's what true pink-tutu-chic is all about!

Until next time, remember, there's always a bit of a ballet queen inside us all, and she’s just waiting to come out! Keep an eye out for next Tuesday’s blog, as we’ll be traveling on to explore even more tutu history, right here at pink-tutu.com. Stay stylish!

Love and Tutu-Tastic Greetings from Emma!

P.S. I always enjoy getting feedback on my tutu explorations, especially the places I visit. What would you like me to explore for the blog next time? If you could visit any time in the history of the tutu, which date and location would you choose and why?

Let me know in the comments!
