#TutuTuesday: A Blast from the Past - 28th July 1981!

Hello darlings! Welcome back to your weekly dose of tutu history on Pink-Tutu.com! It's Tuesday, which means it's time to dive headfirst into another glorious, tulle-filled journey through the past! 🩰

This week, I'm taking you back to the 28th of July, 1981. Now, that's a date that sticks in the memory of many, for that very day was the Royal Wedding of the century - the grand union of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. What a momentous occasion! A fairy tale wedding straight out of a ballet performance! Imagine the excitement! I can practically hear the strains of Tchaikovsky in my ears, and picture everyone wearing their very finest dresses and suits, just like they were heading for the theatre.

Now, before we dive into the tutus of this dazzling day, let's get the kettle boiling and pour ourselves a cuppa. There's nothing quite like a cuppa while reminiscing about the past, right? 😉

Back to the Tutus!

For this particular #TutuTuesday, I thought it fitting to explore the tutus worn at the Royal Wedding, although sadly, no one, not even the bride, graced us with a tutu on the day. Can you imagine if the Princess herself had worn a sparkling, pink tutu? It would have been a sensation! It seems that in 1981, the fashion scene still clung to a sense of formality at such important events. However, it's the small details that make all the difference! Even though a full tutu wasn't part of the equation, the day was awash with plenty of other graceful, flowing details reminiscent of a beautiful ballet.

A Swan Lake-Inspired Dress: The Bride herself opted for an exquisitely crafted silk gown. Its flowing, ivory silk echoed the elegant sweep of a ballerina's skirt and perfectly complimented the Queen's striking turquoise blue gown with its own delicate, billowing layers. Think of it as the closest a Royal Wedding gown ever got to the enchanting elegance of a ballet tutu. The graceful lines of the dress made the entire spectacle more dream-like and, well, ballet-esque. Just imagine if she had donned a little sparkle instead, just a touch of shimmer to reflect the spotlight and draw our eyes to those delicate steps - we can only dream, right?

More Tutu Talk...

Speaking of the Queen, have you ever noticed how she and her attire effortlessly convey the charm and elegance of a classical ballet performance? Her graceful manner and perfect poise in a flawlessly tailored, brightly coloured coat – well, it's nothing short of captivating. Every single time. And don't even get me started on her hat collection. Some of them have that wonderful, flamboyant drama reminiscent of a Spanish flamenco dancer's headwear. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that her love of headwear has roots in her love of dance.

Beyond the Wedding…

Let's journey beyond the wedding and see what else the 28th of July 1981 had to offer the tutu-loving community. For example, in the realm of professional dance, this was a particularly exciting date for fans of the iconic dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov. He was performing "Giselle" in Vienna, and trust me, there's a reason why I call this legend the “Tutu King” for all the elegance he brought to the dance. Sadly, no tutu from this show made it to the internet - a shame, right? You can just imagine what a sensational tutu would have graced the stage! But there were certainly some delightful photos, all perfectly poised and capturing his iconic talent, no matter what tutu he wore, which wasn’t a single one.

Time Traveling Tutu Inspiration

Now, I'm already imagining myself time-traveling to Vienna to see that performance, but as much as I would love to spend a day waltzing with Mikhail Baryshnikov, I’ll admit it’s time to journey back to our time and put a modern twist on the Royal Wedding's grace with our own fabulously feminine tutu ideas! Let’s find that tulle which fits every size, just like the spirit of dancing can connect everyone, regardless of background. After all, you're a vision of elegance, whatever your size or age, darling.

This Week’s Tutu Style

My #TutuTuesday suggestion for you this week is all about incorporating that airy, floaty vibe that echoes those fairytale wedding moments from 1981. Go for a soft, pale pink or a creamy ivory. Imagine the layers of tulle flowing and swirling, the kind that creates that breathtaking, dreamlike movement like a ballerina in the midst of her graceful artistry.

Think vintage. Find that classic design, maybe with some delicate beading, perhaps a lace overlay for that touch of grandeur - a reminder of that enchanting royal moment from our history. But if you're after something a little bolder, a touch of modern edge, there’s nothing stopping you from adding a bright ribbon around your waist, a pop of colour, or even a sprinkling of sparkles for extra drama! Just remember, have fun with your own individual style, darling! A bit of playfulness is the key, and when you get that perfect blend of elegance and whimsy, you’ll be sure to make a tutu statement like the Queen did with her turquoise blue coat, all in a single step.

Remember, no matter what you choose to wear, the true beauty lies in expressing yourself and having the confidence to embrace your inner ballerina. Don't be shy, embrace the joy of dressing up and the magic of dancing, because remember, life is a ballet, and every day is a performance!

Until next week, darlings! Stay fabulous and keep on twirling! 😉

Love,

Emma 🩰
