Tutu Tuesday: Ballet Tutu History, #7820 - 10th November 1981 - The Year of the Tutu!
Oh, darlings! It's another fabulous Tutu Tuesday, and I'm so thrilled to be back with you all! It feels absolutely magical to be zipping through time in my perfectly pink tutu, and this week we're landing in New York City, where the fashion scene is bubbling with energy, just like my petticoats!
It's November 10th, 1981, and, honestly, it feels like everyone's wearing a tutu! There's a kind of ethereal energy in the air that can only be fuelled by the sheer beauty of these delicate dance costumes.
It’s also the night of a truly magical event - the New York City Ballet's "Nutcracker" performance! Honestly, my darling readers, if I had to pick a show to see just once, this would be it. The gorgeous costumes, the magical story, and the sheer elegance of the dancing - it's the epitome of ballerina chic!
Speaking of ballerina chic, the ballet world in 1981 is positively buzzing with fabulous tutus. From the opulent tulle and lace of the Romantic era to the dramatic, modern designs of today, the ballet world is a glorious playground of femininity and elegance.
Today, we're going to delve into the history of this enchanting garment. Let's gather round and enjoy a delightful cuppa with a dollop of history, shall we?
A Brief History of the Ballet Tutu: An Enchanting Journey Through Time
It's fascinating how something so simple and beautiful as a tutu has such a long and winding history, like the swirling fabric itself! It's hard to believe that the tutu as we know it started off quite different from the feather-light, frilly delights we see today.
The first tutus weren’t actually tutus at all. Think long, flowing skirts, sometimes reaching all the way to the ankles - almost like a nightgown! This was because early ballerinas danced in the court and were restricted by the long gowns and tight-laced corsets of the time. They certainly weren’t leaping or pirouette-ing.
As time progressed, ballerinas like Marie Taglioni were pioneering new forms of dancing, especially leaps. This demanded greater freedom of movement, and that’s when things started changing! The skirt, step-by-step, got shorter! Can you imagine how exciting it must have been?
Marie Taglioni, in the 1830s, was one of the pioneers. Her la Sylphide performance shocked the world with its breathtaking, delicate movements. She’s also credited with popularising the first real tutus, just above the knee This was a turning point, and we can see its influence in so many designs we love today.
The Romantic era saw tutus reaching the ultimate height of frills and feathers! This was the time when multiple layers of tulle made the skirts bulge, giving them their signature voluminous shape! Petticoats became a key ingredient to add even more fullness and bounce! We’re still embracing this signature style even today!
Then came the 20th century, where tutus started incorporating a whole new dimension of innovation and design! Think sleek lines, dramatic shapes, and innovative materials – the ballet world started expressing itself with real boldness! This is where we begin to see tutus as works of art.
Think of all those breathtaking ballet classics, from Swan Lake to Giselle. The graceful swishing of a tutu during the corps de ballet dance, the intricate layering in the Sugar Plum Fairy’s tutu, or the haunting black tutu in the iconic “Black Swan” role.
And today, tutus are continually evolving and reflecting the artistic visions of each new generation of ballet choreographers. There are more modern, abstract designs, and playful, minimalist silhouettes – they're all there for a special kind of magic, like an explosion of tulle, swirling through the air!
My Favourite Tutus - And Where to Find Them!
