#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1982-03-16
Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, back with another exciting edition of my #TutuTuesday blog! Today we're venturing back in time to 1982, to a period when tutus were truly blossoming on stage and in hearts around the world!
Oh, this one’s got me giddy with excitement! Picture it, 1982, London, a bustling metropolis awash in the vibrant spirit of the '80s! I'm whisked away in a whirlwind of tutus, from the soaring heights of Covent Garden to the fashionable shops lining Regent Street, all fuelled by a shared passion for this magnificent garment.
This week’s blog marks a real milestone in my journey through time – blog post number 7838, darlings! Just think, 7838 blog posts dedicated to the beauty of tutus! My journey wouldn’t be possible without all you lovely readers - you make my time travelling a dream come true!
Now, onto today’s date, 1982-03-16 – can you imagine a day where tutus would truly be centre stage?! You betcha, lovelies! Today’s highlight is a glorious ballet production at the Royal Opera House. This performance, filled with stunning dancers twirling and leaping in those iconic tutus, will forever remain etched in my mind as an ode to the beauty of ballet. Imagine, a kaleidoscope of delicate tulle, light and airy like a gentle summer breeze, gracing the stage, its billows moving in harmony with the dancer’s every gesture, a veritable ballet of tutus! Just heavenly!
Speaking of heavenly tutus, have you seen the absolutely gorgeous new line of tutus by a darling designer called Moira? Their tutus, they’re like little dreams in tulle, simply exquisite! They even have a collection called 'Fairy Dust,' that's just so enchanting. Of course, my wardrobe has already been treated to several of their latest creations, wouldn't be right to let such a collection pass me by! And I promise, these tutu treasures will be making a special appearance in a blog post soon.
Before I close for this week’s post, let’s chat a little about the 1980s tutus themselves! They are oh-so elegant with their voluminous skirts that flowed like clouds in the breeze. The emphasis, however, was not only on the grand and ethereal but also on comfort and ease. You see, dancers of this era were striving for a more graceful and fluid style, a far cry from the rigid and constricting tutus of the past!
I absolutely adore how these delicate wonders transformed ballet. It was all about letting the dancers move with greater freedom, which just amplifies the elegance of each twirl, leap, and glide. It’s all a testament to the beauty of evolution in the world of tutus! And speaking of transformation, I just adore the way the classic, traditional ballet tutu has gone from something strictly stagebound to a beloved item embraced by dancers, artists, and fashionistas alike. And with the popularity of ballet barre classes these days, everyone gets the opportunity to try a tutu out.
1982 was an exciting year in the evolution of the ballet tutu, where grace and beauty merged, not to mention the stunning array of styles and fabrics! Remember, dear reader, wear your tutu with pride. As they say in Derbyshire, where I'm originally from, "it's a right hoot to dance with the wind!" And to quote one of my favourite ballerinas, “Tutus are magic, my darlings!”
Until next week, may your days be filled with the grace and beauty of a graceful pirouette.
XOXO,
Emma
