It’s amazing how the magic of tutus knows no time bounds – there’s just something so enchanting about those layers of tulle.
So grab your teacups, darling, and settle in, as I recount our thrilling tutu journey!
Tutu Travels Through Time: A Trip Back to the 1980s!
This week, my journey landed me in, oh, wouldn’t you guess? None other than the glorious city of London! That's right, ladies, the epicenter of all things chic and sophisticated, especially for a fashion-loving ballerina like myself! The London Coliseum, with its opulent stage and vibrant atmosphere, was pulsing with anticipation for a dazzling performance of The Sleeping Beauty.
This production wasn't just any old Sleeping Beauty, though, oh no! This was The Royal Ballet, so you just know it was pure brilliance, from the gorgeous choreography, costumes to the awe-inspiring performances.
Let’s rewind the clock a little before our ballet odyssey…
In 1982, the world of ballet was exploding with dazzling innovations and groundbreaking performances. There was a sense of playful freedom amongst dancers, who embraced the beauty of both the classic and the contemporary. Think big, bold colours, daring movement, and yes, tutus! Lots and lots of tutus, ladies!
I felt a thrilling energy in the air at the Coliseum, which had just undergone a grand restoration a few years before. Its opulent interiors were bursting with elegance, setting the stage for a captivating ballet performance. And of course, we’re here to talk about the tutus, my dear, because let’s be honest, those fabulous frocks really stole the show!
Tut-terly Wonderful: Discovering 1982 Fashion
Outside the Coliseum, the streets were abuzz with the 80s style! I felt an almost overwhelming sense of excitement surrounded by all these fashion gems – think bold geometric patterns, neon colours, and hair defying gravity.
Let's take a peek into this fabulous decade…
The iconic leg warmers! Remember them? Paired with brightly-coloured leotards and short, frilly skirts, they became a must-have, and a symbol of the decade’s sporty yet feminine look. My darling readers, can you imagine trying to achieve those iconic 80s leg warmer scrunches?! They may have been an artform, but my legs simply aren’t long enough to pull it off!
Speaking of leotards, they were the hottest piece of attire – especially for my fellow ballerinas. Leotards combined grace and practicality, creating the perfect foundation for a dancer’s fluidity. Of course, leotards were paired with those signature frilly skirts. If we were being truthful, my dear, it seemed like everything had a frill! What a great decade for dancers and fashion lovers, don’t you agree?!
A Dash of Glam from 1982
But let’s not forget the glamour of 1982! From feather boas, to shimmering metallic jackets to shoulder pads so big they could double as a miniature castle…. This era exuded confidence and a sense of unabashed style.
The trends that rocked 1982 would soon be embraced by the fashion-conscious ballerinas. The combination of practical leotards, flashy leggings, and extravagant outfits would soon influence even ballet wear itself.
And you know, what makes all this even more exciting? That we see a bit of this 1982 spirit alive today! Maybe not with those massive shoulder pads, but those leotards and leggings? Oh my yes, they’re back and here to stay!
Let's Get Back to Ballet…
Okay, dear readers, enough about the 80s fashion scene (though that does have me craving for a new shopping spree!) - I must bring us back to the dazzling realm of ballet, where tutus are the undisputed stars.
And the most prominent figure of all: The iconic tutu.
There's just something about tutus – how they dance and float with such ethereal grace. You could tell I’m extremely excited about this journey, because as always, I had my trusty pink tutu alongside me to soak up the every bit of ballet inspiration in 1982.
What about those tutu’s of the 80s? How did they shape what we love today?
You might be surprised by the history of the tutus. And the most stunning fact? The Romantic era tutus of the 19th century actually differed drastically from the tutus we see today. The earlier versions were made from more substantial materials. Think: fabric that resembles that extra stiff fabric of your grandmother’s tablecloth, made into wide, layered dresses.
It’s hard to imagine the graceful flowing silhouette of a contemporary tutu, with layers of fabric light as a feather!
You see, the history of tutus really is fascinating! There was this amazing breakthrough when tulle was developed in the 1830s, offering a delicate and versatile fabric for these iconic costumes! And poof, the tutu transformed!
The more layered and extravagant designs really emerged later on, evolving with the art of dance itself.
Oh my, my fellow ballerina enthusiasts – isn’t that a marvelous glimpse into the journey of the tutu? And to think how many fabulous new trends may arise with a simple ballet skirt!
Back to my travels – What’s Next For Emma?!
