#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1982-11-09

Hello lovelies! Itā€™s Emma, your tutu-obsessed time traveller here, ready to take you on another whirl through ballet history. Itā€™s Tuesday, which means itā€™s time for #TutuTuesday, where we dive into the fascinating world of tutus, from their humble beginnings to the gravity-defying masterpieces they are today!

Todayā€™s date, 9th November 1982, holds a special place in my heart ā€“ it was the day that iconic pink tutu made its debut! And no, Iā€™m not talking about a tutu from my wardrobe (though believe me, I have a rather impressive collection) but a tutu that sent shockwaves through the ballet world!

But before I get ahead of myself, let's take a trip back to the beginningā€¦ and where better to start than in my beloved Derbyshire?

I may travel through time, but my roots lie in the charming villages and green hills of Derbyshire. Imagine: crisp autumn air, fields shimmering gold, and the comforting scent of warming wood fires. Picture the rolling countryside ā€“ perfect inspiration for the elegance and graceful movements of ballet!

Now, back to 1982, my dear readers! Imagineā€¦ the Cold War is simmering, the Walkman is all the rage, andā€¦ wait for itā€¦ a new tutu has graced the stage of the Royal Ballet! The dancers are sporting a bold, revolutionary look ā€“ the new "Bellini" tutu. Its light, airy fabric and romantic bell shape are a far cry from the heavier tutus of the past. The new era is upon us, my fellow ballet enthusiasts, an era of fluidity and lightness. The dance floor is their playground, their movements a symphony of joy, and it all started on 9th November 1982!

You can bet that, when the bellini tutu graced the stage, there was an eruption of excited whispers, gasps of admiration, and heartfelt applause. It was the day we embraced a new era in ballet fashion, a revolution that was not just on stage, but in every young girl's imagination ā€“ who, after all, wasn't entranced by the promise of swirling, graceful movement and effortless beauty?

But what is a ballerina without the perfect stage to shine on? Today, weā€™re travelling all the way to New York City! Why New York? Because it is the home to the world famous American Ballet Theatre! I love travelling by train; thereā€™s something wonderfully elegant about travelling first class across the USA. Itā€™s almost like an ode to the romance of ballet.

New Yorkā€™s vibrant energy, and its embrace of artistic innovation, makes it the perfect setting to witness the ā€œBelliniā€ tutu in action! Thereā€™s just something truly exhilarating about watching a ballet performance at the Met, surrounded by the glittering glamour and excited chatter.

And hereā€™s a bit of a fun fact! While we're at the Met, I couldnā€™t resist a bit of shopping for some sparkling additions to my own tutu collection! You see, a good ballet tutu is an investment! Like a trusty old friend, a beautifully-made tutu can go through the paces, and yet emerge with grace and elegance, ready for another whirl around the stage, and even through the bustling streets of London!

Of course, Iā€™m not suggesting we all wear tutus in everyday life! (Though, a splash of pink here and there certainly brightens up even the dullest day, doesnā€™t it?) I think the real magic of a tutu lies in its symbolism. Itā€™s a reminder that thereā€™s a bit of magic in each of us. A bit of playful spirit, of creativity, and of that unbridled joy of dancing to your own tune.

To my lovely readers, I implore you, even if you havenā€™t graced the stage in a tutu, put on some music, turn on your inner ballerina, and let the spirit of the dance wash over you.

Remember to join me next week for #TutuTuesday, where we'll journey into yet another time and see where ballet tutus have taken us!

Until next time, darling!
