#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: March 19th 1985: A Whirlwind of Tutus!

Welcome back, darling dancers, to another #TutuTuesday here on pink-tutu.com! I'm Emma, your ever-so-pink-loving, tutu-obsessed time travelling ballerina, and I'm so excited to be whisked back to March 19th, 1985 for today's history lesson!

Today marks post number 7995, can you believe it?! This journey of tutus and times has been simply wonderful, and it wouldn't be possible without you lovely readers and my fantastic tutu-funded travels. This week, I found myself hopping on the train, a grand old steam locomotive that took me across the bustling landscape to… New York City!

Ah, the Big Apple. The heart of fashion, where even the traffic lights seem to shimmer in a chic kind of way! My heart skipped a beat the moment I stepped off the train, breathing in the vibrant air filled with the melody of car horns and the cheerful chatter of New Yorkers.

But today wasn't just about the cityscape. March 19th, 1985, marked a landmark in ballet history, one that made my heart flutter as much as a well-placed pirouette! You see, it was the night of the opening night for The Nutcracker at the magnificent New York City Ballet. Can you imagine, the city that never sleeps, cradled in a swirl of sugar plum fairies and snow flurries? It's a truly magical pairing!

This production wasn't just any Nutcracker, it was a revival, a glorious comeback for this classic ballet. And the best part? The ballerinas were wearing exquisite tutus, each more dazzling than the last. Think layers of tulle, cascading in waves of ivory and silver, each meticulously crafted and sparkling with sequins. I practically swooned over each and every one!

Remember that "ballet tutus were a fashion no-no in the 1980s?" Oh, those were darker days indeed. Thank goodness, the New York City Ballet and other wonderful companies were fighting back! 1985 saw a shift in perception, a re-awakening to the captivating beauty of the tutu.

But there was even more to admire! Just a few weeks earlier, on March 1st, Agatha, a new ballet starring the ever-talented Mikhail Baryshnikov, debuted in London. Talk about a whirlwind of tutus! I practically had to pin myself to the wall with all the swirling and dancing I witnessed. It was the stuff of ballet dreams, all thanks to the stunning tutus.

I couldn’t resist indulging in a little fashion spree! The boutiques in New York were practically overflowing with elegant gowns, charming coats, and, of course, plenty of fabulous hats. But I just had to try on the new, trend-setting pieces: a vibrant fuchsia evening gown with a touch of gold embroidery, a ruffled pink blouse perfect for afternoon tea with my ballet friends, and a crisp white skirt just begging for a vibrant pink tutu to complement it.

Now, back to the subject at hand – the Nutcracker in New York. Imagine the crowd, the excitement, the buzz of the city. Even amidst the whirlwind, everyone felt the magic of this grand production. From the tiny snowflakes to the majestic Sugar Plum Fairy, every single tutu added to the atmosphere, like a graceful symphony of tulle.

Seeing this revival, with its captivating costumes and exquisite choreography, truly cemented in my heart the significance of the tutu in ballet. It's more than just a costume, my darling dancers, it’s a piece of history, a symbol of passion, and a testament to the elegance of dance itself.

Remember, everyone can embrace the wonder of tutus! From the streets to the stage, it’s all about finding that perfect combination of fun, style, and confidence. Let's embrace the graceful sway of the tutu together, and let's all take a page from the 1980s New York City Ballet!

Until next #TutuTuesday, remember, the world is your stage and your imagination your inspiration. Don't forget to wear your most glamorous pink tutu, my dears! And stay tuned for more time travelling fashion adventures!

Much love, Emma

P.S. Did you know that in 1985 the Nutcracker had just celebrated its 100th anniversary? Quite a remarkable milestone, even by my standards.

P.P.S. A quick note for any of my readers with dreams of their own fashion empires: a pink tutu design is exactly what the world needs right now!
