#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 27th August 1985 (Post #8018)

Hiya darlings! It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing time traveller Emma here, back with another exciting blast from the past! This week we're waltzing back to 27th August 1985 and oh my, what a delightful journey this has been! Let me tell you, tutus are everywhere in this era, and not just on stage.

Today, I'm taking us to New York City, the heart of the ballet world, where a little something special is happening...

Remember those darling tutus we talked about last week, those romantic Romantic ones? Well, imagine their fabulous cousin – the tutu of the 1980s! This style is all about that extra flair, extra drama, extra tulle, just the way we like it! It's like taking that classical look and giving it a bit of a glam rock makeover! You'll see them swishing across stages in vibrant colours – deep jewel tones, vivid pink, even silver and gold! Think of that glamorous shimmer we all love on a beautiful ballerina.

You see, the 1980s was all about pushing boundaries. It's a fabulous time for the dance world and that means daring new creations, amazing costumes, and some seriously talented dancers taking centre stage. Think Mikhail Baryshnikov, the most captivating Russian dancer who captured everyone's heart and moved from the Soviet Union to become a celebrated American star. His skill, agility and charisma is all wrapped up in the magical tutus he was so brilliant in, in this time period!

But hold on a moment – this is also the time of 'street' ballet! Can you believe it?! These days, ballet's all about exciting moves, cool energy, and having a good time! Forget traditional forms and all that - just go for it! That’s what we're talking about!

Think dazzling routines and exciting styles that bring a touch of the city streets right onto the dance floor. These dynamic dancers have such personality and pizzazz and they're all showing off those fabulously expressive costumes – including the most awesome tutus, obviously. Just think – imagine you, all decked out in your favourite tulle, in your local park, showing off those amazing moves, with some funky music! Wouldn't that be divine?!

Speaking of divine… the excitement doesn’t stop there! There are some spectacular ballet shows happening in the city! The New York City Ballet, a staple for amazing tutus and amazing talent, has a stunning program called "Stars & Stripes", a patriotic mix of classical and modern styles – perfect for a good ol' tutu show, and just perfect for my afternoon! I can't wait to experience this myself. And if there’s one thing I’m here to say, it's that these are some pretty amazing times to be a ballet fan, darling!

Of course, no trip to New York in the 80s would be complete without a little fashion fix! I'm talking department stores and fabulous window displays. And while we're talking 1980s style – let’s not forget the biggest must-have accessory: big, bold, beautiful hair! Those iconic 80s hairstyles, those incredible voluminous bobs – pure fashion heaven! I can just imagine myself with an amazing perm and my sparkly pink tutu - just waiting for those flashbulbs! And as if I wasn't feeling fab already, it’s absolutely brilliant to be experiencing this all while enjoying a magnificent slice of cheesecake – something they do incredibly well here in NYC!

Back home in Derbyshire, life is just as glamorous. Just last week I went to a fantastic ballet show at the Derby Playhouse Theatre. A local dance school even showcased some new talent. Can you believe it? - little kids with amazing tutu outfits! I could have cried with joy – we really have some serious ballet superstars of the future!

As for me, my ballet lessons are in full swing - can’t resist getting in those plies! It's so wonderful to be surrounded by the elegance of classical dance and the excitement of new trends. It's truly a magical world that we get to experience. So remember, always believe in the power of the pink tutu!

But remember darlings, TutuTuesday is just one of the ways we can express ourselves. Keep that magic of the tutu spirit going – rock your best colours, dress to impress, and show everyone your individual style. That's what makes us so brilliant and unique. Keep sparkling!

See you all next Tuesday, darlings!

Love,

Emma xx
