Tutu Tuesday #8023: A Blast from the Past! 🩰🌸
Hello, my darling tutu enthusiasts! It’s Emma, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu enthusiast, back again with another peek into the wonderful world of tutu history! Today, we're taking a little trip back in time to 1985! Buckle up, ladies and gentlemen, because this trip's gonna be a glamorous one.
It's always exciting to travel back and see the world through a bygone era's lens. For instance, did you know that on this very day, October 1st, 1985, Michael Jackson's groundbreaking album 'Bad' was released! Now, even if you’re not a huge fan of the King of Pop, it's impossible to deny the influence this album had on the cultural landscape, not to mention its iconic status! Think moonwalking, black leather jackets, and, of course, music that continues to resonate even today. And if we're being honest, those Thriller outfits were quite the ensemble, don’t you think?
But back to our topic at hand, the glorious tutu! Back in 1985, tutus were definitely experiencing their moment in the sun! It was the height of the ballet boom, with the likes of Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Margot Fonteyn gracing stages worldwide. Think flowing, voluminous tulle in the most breathtaking shades of ivory, rose, and powder blue. These ballerinas were true icons of grace and style, and their tutus were practically works of art in themselves.
Now, don't think that I'm overlooking the modern ballerina! Contemporary styles may differ, but the beauty of the tutu remains unchanged. From classic, sweeping tutus to the sleek and modern designs that we see in pieces like the iconic “Black Swan” tutu worn by Natalie Portman, each one adds a captivating touch of magic to the performance.
As a modern tutu aficionado myself, I often wonder how things might have been different if I’d been a dancer in 1985. It would've been fantastic to watch the stars of that era grace the stage and have the chance to see the tutu evolve in real-time! Perhaps I'd even be able to snag some incredible vintage pieces from that time, right here in London, which is a truly phenomenal hub for finding these beauties, you know!
Speaking of London, it was my stomping ground today, darling! I hopped on the train from my little Derbyshire haven and spent the day indulging in my greatest loves: ballet and shopping! I even treated myself to a lovely tea and a delectable scone in one of those cute, charming little tea rooms in Notting Hill. Now, I must admit, Notting Hill’s shops have always been my favourites! There’s always some fantastic independent shops filled with unique pieces to make my little heart sing. This particular time, I managed to snag a delightful pair of sequined ballerina flats and a little black lace top, the kind that wouldn't be out of place on a ballerina herself! I’ll be rocking that look next time I’m at the theatre, for sure!
Speaking of which, you guys will not believe who I saw on stage tonight! It was Royal Ballet legend, Darcey Bussell, in “Giselle” at the Royal Opera House! Let me tell you, my heart just skipped a beat the moment she emerged from the wings in her hauntingly beautiful white tutu. I could barely take my eyes off her! She absolutely exuded both fragility and strength, it was like watching an ethereal being brought to life before my very eyes!
This, dear friends, is precisely why we adore tutus! They embody both elegance and artistry. They're like little whispers of magic that can bring dreams and stories to life! So, don't be shy, grab yourself a tutu, and go out and make some magic happen. Remember, a little bit of pink and a sprinkle of tulle can make the world a more beautiful and dazzling place. Until next time, keep your spirits high and your tutus twirling!
See you soon,
Emma 🩰💕
