#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Christmas Magic on the Stage! 🩰🎄

Welcome, lovelies! It’s Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu-wearing time traveller, and it’s another glorious #TutuTuesday! This week, we're turning the clock back to 1985, and we're diving headfirst into the fabulous, sparkly world of Christmas ballet!

Post number 8035: Festive Twirls and Sparkling Delights!

Before we get into the tutu history, I must say – Christmas in 1985 was just… dreamy! London was glittering with lights, shop windows were a rainbow of decorations, and the aroma of mince pies and roasting chestnuts hung heavy in the air. It was truly a time to sparkle!

Speaking of sparkles, our focus for this #TutuTuesday is, of course, the ballet! It's no secret that the festive season brings a flurry of amazing ballet productions, and 1985 was no exception! While many ballet companies performed their traditional Christmas pantomimes, the highlight for me (and, frankly, for all of London’s ballet aficionados) was The Royal Ballet's production of The Nutcracker!

Now, the Nutcracker is practically synonymous with Christmas ballet. It's the epitome of festive enchantment! But imagine being able to experience this magic in 1985, with all the incredible costumes, the stunning choreography, and the beautiful music!

Imagine swirling through the snow-covered land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and leaping into the heart of the Land of Sweets with the dashing Nutcracker Prince! Imagine being transported to a realm where magic truly exists, all thanks to the artistry of the dancers and the exquisite artistry of the production!

And while I am here… let's talk about the tutus! The 1980s were all about big, bold, and beautiful, and that applied to tutus too. Imagine delicate lace tutus paired with sumptuous velvet, glittering with rhinestones, and shimmering in every colour of the rainbow.

There was a real emphasis on romanticism and a kind of nostalgic fairy tale aesthetic that perfectly captured the spirit of Christmas. Ballet, as a form of performance, has this unparalleled power to transport audiences into other worlds. And it's this transformative magic, that’s made The Nutcracker a Christmas favourite year after year!

A Blast from the Past

The 1980s also saw a revival of Swan Lake. Imagine those beautiful, billowing white tutus with the dramatic lighting and a ballerina’s exquisite movements that made your heart flutter! Swan Lake truly embodies the transformative power of the dance – from the elegant poise of Odette, the Swan Queen, to the ethereal grace of her dark counterpart, Odile.

Time Travelling and Tutus

Now, you might be wondering how a tutu-loving lass like me can go back in time! Well, I’ll let you in on a little secret! It’s all thanks to my beloved ballet!

You see, I have this amazing talent for being a time travelling ballerina, or perhaps it would be more accurate to call myself a tutu-chasing time traveler. You see, after every grand performance, a tiny bit of magical dust, full of joy and wonder, sprinkles onto my pointe shoes. And by combining my pointe shoes with a splash of that magical dust, I can hop onto a magical railway track, (much like a high-speed fairyland Tube), which takes me to my next ballet-themed destination!

Travel and the Spirit of Christmas

It’s an absolute privilege, I must say, to see the evolution of dance, fashion, and theatre across the decades. But to be able to travel back in time and share all of my discoveries with you, is truly the cherry on top! And remember, dear friends, Christmas is always about the power of the imagination, a dash of sparkle, and, of course, the very best kind of ballet!

Next week, we're going back even further to uncover the glorious world of ballet in the Victorian era! I can't wait to share all the fascinating historical nuggets I've found on our journey together.

In the meantime, do remember: Every day can be a bit like Christmas if you choose to see the world with a sprinkle of magic! Don't be afraid to dance, dream big, and wear your sparkle!

Until next time, remember to keep twirling, my dear readers!

Emma 💖
