#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Look Back to 1986!

#8056

Greetings from your favourite pink tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina blogger, Emma! I’m so excited to be back with another edition of my weekly #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History. It’s so lovely to see all the gorgeous, swirly tutus in the ballet world today, and it's truly fascinating to travel back in time and explore their origins, isn't it? This week, I've been twirling through the ballet archives of May 20th, 1986, and trust me, it was an absolute delight.

Today’s post is inspired by my latest trip to Paris, where I’ve been having the most fabulous time. Parisian ballet, oh, it's just exquisite! I’m lucky to be funding my travel through performance fees from dancing – and honestly, seeing shows like "Giselle" and "The Nutcracker" never gets old! And speaking of getting old… this #TutuTuesday post is all about an absolute gem from the 1986 ballet world, so fasten your tutu ribbons and get ready for a trip back in time!

Back to the Future… well, the Past!

Stepping onto a platform at the Gare du Nord station (just lovely – you really must see it, dear readers!) in a billowing pink tulle creation, I found myself suddenly transported to May 20th, 1986. Paris was abuzz with activity! It felt so glamorous and stylish; the men sported sharp suits, the women donned bold and bright clothing and I felt right at home, amongst the hustle and bustle, surrounded by such lovely style.

To fully embrace the 1980s style I, of course, wore the latest fashions. You know, a fun, poofy shoulder-padded blouse, leg-warmers with a lovely bright turquoise cardigan over a silky flowing top and, of course, my favourite ballerina flats! My pink tutu swirled delightfully around my legs, just right for stepping out and experiencing 1986 Paris! I can’t imagine leaving home without my pink tutu; it just adds a touch of magical sparkle to every day.

Ballet on the 20th of May: What Was in Store?

As it turned out, 1986 was an incredible year for ballet! From the majestic "La Bayadère" to the emotionally-charged "Romeo and Juliet," there was something for every taste. In fact, on this particular day, there was a wonderful performance of the enchanting ballet "The Sleeping Beauty." Can you imagine being transported to a magical kingdom filled with fairies, princes, and yes, you guessed it… plenty of lovely tutus!

Fashion Inspiration from 1986

There was so much great ballet fashion inspiration on display back in 1986! You’d be surprised at how the styles echo some of our modern fashion today, although sometimes I think things were a little more colourful back then! I adored the layered and billowy looks, and especially those vibrant leg warmers. Think bright pinks, blues, and yellows! And remember, a well-placed, poofy shoulder pad can truly add drama and elegance to any outfit.

Of course, it's all about how you feel, dear readers! If a pink tutu makes you feel powerful and beautiful, then embrace it. You can’t deny the elegant charm of a classic pink tutu! I also found it utterly delightful to look at the elegant simplicity of the classic ballet costumes – such a beautiful juxtaposition to the playful and whimsical 80’s fashions!

Spreading the Tutu Love – Pink or Not

This whole adventure truly reiterated my lifelong mission to spread the joy of tutus! Every woman is a ballerina at heart, don’t you agree? Why not embrace the twirl and the elegance and step into a world of fabulous fashion?

I even witnessed a fascinating change in how people were thinking about tutus back then. They weren't just seen as part of the ballet world! In 1986, street fashion, pop stars, even children were all adopting the delightful, twirly style of the tutu. What’s more, these weren’t just for performances anymore. They became playful fashion accessories that brought out the inner ballerina in everyone, not just dancers!

I think the trend really gained steam when it was paired with an absolutely stunning performance at the Grand Palais that very day in 1986. I’m so delighted to say, that it starred yours truly! (Just kidding... or maybe I'm not?) 😉 But, what a fantastic time that was for tutu lovers. There was a definite shift in perspective, and you know what, my pink-tutu wearing friends? It makes me believe that everyone really can dance and feel wonderful with the grace and charm of a ballerina.

I love seeing these historical shifts and fashion trends in my time-travel journeys. If we could all remember how we used to see those classic, enchanting tutu designs – a bit more playful, a bit more colourful… – I think it would change the way we think about style today. We’d definitely be celebrating those lovely little details of every beautiful ballet performance: the swishy skirts, the delicate designs, the vibrant shades, and the breathtaking artistry of these beautiful pieces.

So, thank you for joining me today on this trip to 1986! If you are in Derbyshire, I'll be at the lovely Peak District Dance Academy this Saturday! I am also making my way over to Paris again this month to catch the opening of the fantastic "A Midsummer Night's Dream." It's a production I just cannot miss, and it will inspire a wonderful #TutuTuesday blog post, so keep a lookout!

I am eternally optimistic about a future filled with swirling tutus, beautiful dance moves, and the boundless energy of ballerinas worldwide. And if I’m honest, I wouldn't mind seeing a few more pink tutus, wouldn't you agree, my darling readers? Let's go dance, and keep that pink tutu spinning! ✨

Until next week,

Emma, The Time Travelling Tutu Queen
