#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - June 3rd 1986! 🩰💖
Hey darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller! It's a beautiful Tuesday, the sun is shining, and you know what that means... it's time for another blast from the past!
This week, we're twirling back to June 3rd, 1986! Buckle up, because this trip's a real treat! We're hopping on the Eurostar (did I tell you how much I love train journeys?!) and heading straight to Paris. Why Paris? Because it's the city of lights, the city of fashion, the city where everyone's ready for a bit of…well, let’s just say a little tutus in the afternoon!
1986 was a grand year for the world of dance, my dears! We've got all the fantastic things from the earlier days that I love – beautiful sets, dazzling costumes, and, of course, the incredible talent! Ballet in 1986 is truly on top of its game.
Speaking of incredible talent, did you know June 3rd, 1986 was the day Mikhail Baryshnikov – the legendary Russian dancer – performed in "Giselle" at the Palais Garnier?! Now, that’s an experience you don’t forget! If you can't travel through time with me, then do go see a ballet – and if you can get a Baryshnikov performance, you’ll be thanking me later!
A Tutu Tailored for You!
Right, onto tutus! 1986 is the year of the grand tulle – the larger the skirt, the better! Think flowing waves of delicate tulle, light as a feather and perfectly pouffed, cascading down in elegant, layered tiers. These tutus are designed to create a majestic effect on stage – all about those romantic swirls and spins, perfect for conveying stories of love, loss and hope.
Now, just because it’s the '80s doesn’t mean it has to be all traditional! Think bold colours – deep jewel tones and dazzling neons are having a moment. Don’t be afraid to mix it up, add some sparkly accents for good measure – it’s a fun time to experiment! We also see beautiful embroidered and embellished details in those magnificent tutus, bringing them to life with intricately-woven flowers, ribbons and sparkles!
My Tutu Trend Pick!
You can’t talk about tutu history in 1986 without mentioning the tutu we saw on the great, the beautiful, the legendary, Margot Fonteyn in the final moments of the Royal Ballet’s production of “La Sylphide." Remember those iconic tutus that are super short with flowing skirts? Those were a huge trend back then, making each delicate move extra dramatic and, dare I say, quite mesmerizing.
