#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1986-07-08 - Let's Dance Back to the 80s!
Hello darlings! Welcome back to #TutuTuesday on www.pink-tutu.com, your weekly dose of tutu history! It's your favourite pink-loving, tutu-obsessed ballerina blogger, Emma here. And guess what, my fellow twirlers? This week's journey back in time is going to be totally epic!
It's 8th July, 1986 and I've just hopped off the train in New York City. This vibrant, energy-filled city has always been a tutu lover's paradise, and it's bursting with life today.
This week's blog is actually going to be about my time traveling experience. You see, when I'm not writing this blog, or whirling about the dance floor, I'm off on my latest time-travelling adventure.
My trusty time machine (well, let’s just say I use the funds from performing in the grand old theatres around the world - a real ballet ballerina never reveals her secrets!) brought me here today for something special - I'm going to see Baryshnikov dance at the Metropolitan Opera!
Let me tell you, seeing Baryshnikov in all his glory, the perfect movement, the elegant power - oh my! He made every tutued twirl, every graceful leap seem so effortless! It’s no wonder he’s one of the world’s greatest ballerinos - an absolute legend! (Don't even get me started on the stunning costumes – a mix of elegant and dramatic with shimmering fabrics, perfectly paired with his stunning movements!)
Speaking of costumes, can we talk about tutus in the 1980s? There’s a wonderful 80s flair to the ballet tutus – I've noticed so much movement and expressive styling, a truly fascinating mix of graceful fluidity and bold expressions.
Back to Baryshnikov’s performance. The whole experience was incredibly moving. It’s a fantastic time to be a ballerina; even the American ballet audience was buzzing with excitement. It's clear everyone was swept up in the magic of this dance. And then, after the show? Shopping in the city!
I've just got to share a little something I saw: these absolutely divine hot pink leotards! Now, let me tell you, the 80s is the decade of neon and fluorescent colors, but pink? Oh my goodness! It is truly divine. The colours are popping with life, bright and brilliant. Imagine wearing them on stage… wow! It’s almost enough to make me want to give up on my own pale pink colour scheme! (almost…)
Anyway, it was a brilliant day, with just enough 80s sassiness to spice things up a bit! My shopping bag is full of inspiration, ready to go. I can't wait to incorporate some of those amazing patterns and textures into my own ballet outfits. (Pink, obviously. Always pink!)
This weekend, I'll be off on the train, exploring the vibrant energy of New York. It's going to be the perfect escape from Derbyshire and a little slice of tutued paradise!
And you know, there's nothing I love more than getting back on my own dance floor in Derby and showing off the newest trends from around the world – all in my own signature style. That, my lovelies, is the true magic of ballet. The excitement! The sparkle! The glamour! And of course, a pinch of pink!
Stay fabulous, darlings. Remember, tutus aren’t just for ballet dancers! Let's see your best tutu looks, tagged with #TutuTuesday!
Until next week, remember…
"There's a tutu for every body. Dance like nobody’s watching!”
Love, Emma, The Tutu Fairy xx
