Tutu Tuesday #8087: Twirling Through Time to 1986! 🩰✨

Hey lovelies! Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast, ready to whisk you back in time to a decade dripping with frills, glitter, and oh, so much legwarmer! Today’s #TutuTuesday adventure takes us all the way back to 1986, the year leg warmers reigned supreme, shoulder pads peaked their way to the sky, and Madonna was a total queen bee! Buckle up, because this journey’s gonna be fabulously 80s!

From Derbyshire, I took the train (with a stylishly-matched pink beret and a fluffy scarf, naturally) straight to New York City, the ultimate ballet hub back in 1986! Just imagine it - a kaleidoscope of neon colours, power suits with oversized jackets, and of course, leg warmers for days! The energy was electrifying, with music blasting out of every corner and a vibe so vibrant, it’d make even a vintage pink tutu twirl!

What’s On Tonight? A Night of Classical Ballet in New York City

And wouldn’t you know it, there’s a fantastic ballet performance at the Lincoln Center tonight! Imagine the sheer opulence - grand theaters, velvet seats, and a glittering stage setting that would make any tutu shimmer! This particular evening features none other than the legendary New York City Ballet, showcasing the masterful artistry of their ballerinas. I just can’t imagine a better way to spend an evening!

Fashion Forward! 80s Trends I Simply Must See

After the ballet, my mission is clear: find the ultimate vintage store to soak up all the fashion goodness of the 1980s! Picture it: piles of neon tights, shimmering sequins, and enough leg warmers to equip an entire ballet class! Now, I can't imagine wearing these bold fashion trends in the present day. Those leg warmers make my little pink tutu look awfully demure in comparison! I might even find a vintage tutu or two while I’m at it. I just love finding treasures that scream “1980s” in all their glory!

Tutu Timeline: The Evolution of the Ballet Tutu

Of course, no trip back in time would be complete without a little ballet history! While we're here in 1986, I want to give a little nod to the ballet tutu’s history - it’s a real testament to fashion's fascinating evolution. Those first tutus weren’t these big, poufy beauties, oh no! They started as very practical garments to help ballerinas spin, jump, and leap. It was the romantic era, 1830s - think tutus with very full skirts that almost grazed the floor! The designs have gone through major transformations to get where we are today!

From the romantic style with the massive skirt to the more practical tutu, it’s exciting to trace its evolution! Tutus can be so dramatic, whimsical, and even sporty (just look at the tutus they wear for contemporary dance - those ballerinas are truly athletes!). This elegant costume is the key element to the look that so many little girls are drawn to when they’re imagining themselves as ballerinas!
