Tutu Tuesday #8096: 1987 - The Tutu Takes the Stage!
Hello darlings! Emma here, back from another whirlwind journey through time, bringing you a new dose of tutu magic straight from the archives of #TutuTuesday. This week, I've travelled back to a time when shoulder pads were practically houses and leg warmers ruled the world… the fabulous 1987! Buckle up, you pink-loving darlings, because we're going on a stylish and twirly adventure!
As you all know, my ultimate mission is to spread the gospel of pink tutus. I dream of a world where everyone embraces the fluff, the frill, the sheer magic of twirling in pink! So, imagine my delight as I step into the vibrant 1987! This was a time of BIG hair, BIGGER dreams, and the ballet world was definitely stepping up its game!
Now, back to 1987: a magical February day, the 24th, to be precise. Picture it: a crisp winter morning in… say, London! I mean, it just wouldn't be #TutuTuesday without a trip to London, would it? 😉 The air buzzes with the energy of a new day and the city feels alive with the anticipation of a big ballet premiere. Oh, the excitement!
Today, 1987’s London theatre scene is alight with excitement over the debut of a brand-new ballet: "The Sleeping Beauty." A classic, right? But, trust me, this production was a dazzling new twist on the traditional story. And guess what? Our very own darling ballet tutu was at the centre of it all!
Walking into the theatre, I can't help but gasp. Oh, the beauty! The dazzling costumes with all their embellishments. And the tutus? F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S! They were truly a vision. They twirled, they spun, they just breathed fairytale magic with every movement. This is what ballet is about: dreams taking flight.
From the classic "white act" tutu, the very essence of the ballerina's artistry, to the flamboyant, vibrant hues of the other characters, it’s a ballet lover’s dream! We're not just talking about ordinary tutus, my loves. Think bold colours, intricate lace patterns, layers upon layers of delicate netting - it's a sight that leaves even the most seasoned ballerina breathless! It was all about grand and dramatic, a celebration of ballet in all its exquisite glory.
You see, ballet in 1987 was undergoing its own sort of tutu revolution. Designers were pushing the boundaries, daring to explore new styles, shapes, and colours. This, my dear readers, was the start of the Tutu Renaissance! The world was rediscovering the exquisite beauty and artistic expression of the ballet tutu. It wasn't just an accessory, it was a symbol of freedom, artistry, and dreams coming to life.
Speaking of dreams, a trip to Covent Garden in London always feels like stepping into a magical world. From the stunning architecture to the anticipation buzzing in the air as you head to the ballet, every visit feels special. But I need to get to a shop! Covent Garden has the most beautiful department stores, with rows and rows of gorgeous fabrics! You've got your velvets, your satins, your chiffons, and don't even get me started on the laces! My oh my, the colours!
Then, after shopping, it's a grand dinner in a delightful London restaurant, indulging in delicious English cuisine. I'm a big fan of roasted chicken and mashed potatoes; a hearty, homely dish that reminds me of home - Derbyshire, that is. Of course, with a glass of pink champagne for good measure. This is the life, wouldn't you say?
I even made my way to Harrods! Oh, the divine decadence! The smell of the freshest perfumes, the dazzling gowns - truly a sensory paradise. And who better than the fashionable, fun-loving pink tutu wearer to soak it all in!
In 1987, the tutu wasn't just about ballet. It was starting to creep into everyday fashion! We saw the first glimmerings of the tutus trend - a dash of tulle here, a bit of ruffled netting there. The "New Romantic" look was in full swing. People were embracing drama, a little bit of eccentricity. It was an era that celebrated colour, bold fashion, and creativity - just like our darling tutu. I feel a new blog post coming on! Maybe "1987's New Romantic Tutu Trends". I need to keep this journey documented for the sake of posterity!
My trip back to 1987, fueled by a few ballets and a love for fashion, showed me how powerful the ballet tutu is. It transcends time, trends, and even genres! From the stage to the street, the tutu represents a kind of freedom that makes everyone feel beautiful. The tutu was in the midst of becoming more than just an item of dancewear. It symbolized a bold spirit, creativity, and an inner passion to embrace individuality - a true revolution in style!
After an afternoon spent shopping in London and catching a glorious ballet, the evening brings a delicious treat. As a treat to my travel-weary soul and to commemorate my adventure, I grab some fish and chips and catch a train home. A quiet evening with a warm meal and a view of the English countryside through the train window are truly what the heart needs to wind down from such a stylish adventure.
Until next Tuesday, my dears. Let's keep on twirling and celebrating the magic of the pink tutu. Stay fabulous, my loves!
