#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: March 10th 1987 - Post #8098

Hello, my lovely tutu-loving friends! Welcome back to my weekly ballet tutu history journey on www.pink-tutu.com. It’s #TutuTuesday, and I'm bursting with excitement to take you on a trip back to 1987, a year filled with vibrant colours and flamboyant fashion. I’m wearing my newest, most pinkest, tutu for the occasion – just look at this feather boa, it’s absolutely divine!

Now, let's put on our travelling shoes (perhaps a comfy pair of ballet flats? ) and take a trip to London for this week's Tutu Tuesday!

London! Oh London, the city that never sleeps, pulsates with a passion for everything fashionable, even tutus! It's like stepping into a whirlwind of vibrant life, and of course, I'm here to bring you a little piece of that magic, from a time when hairspray and neon colours were the ultimate fashion statements.

But let's start our journey from where I live in Derbyshire, shall we? Imagine hopping aboard a quaint train carriage with my floral pink suitcase in hand – full of shimmering pink tutus, of course!

My Fashion Journey: Train to London!

The journey on the train to London is always such an inspiration. Today's journey on the "Flying Scotsman" feels like I’ve been transported back in time, just as much as our #TutuTuesday adventure. But even on this journey in my vintage frock with my pink and feathered beret (found on a charity shop spree) my inner ballerina is already designing tutus in my head! Maybe one inspired by a classic paisley pattern? Or a futuristic version that glimmers with tiny mirrors?! The inspiration for tutu design is all around us!

Back to our #TutuTuesday

As I stepped off the train onto the vibrant platform at Kings Cross station, I could feel the pulsating heart of London, like a symphony in motion. Today I’m going to take in a show – but not just any show – the ballet! This week is very special as a show of Swan Lake, my absolute favourite, is performing at the Royal Opera House. What a classic, a perfect ballet to capture the true spirit of the ballerina, but with a touch of modern fashion to top it off! I might need to visit a vintage fashion shop later. I love searching for tutus with that ‘80s vibe!

A Peek Inside the Ballet World

Before I dash off, let's dive into the exciting world of the tutu in 1987. This era in dance was filled with revolutionary steps and expressive movement! Imagine elegant ballerinas with a splash of drama! And you just had to have the biggest and fluffiest tutus possible – imagine layers upon layers of soft, billowing tulle! It's like the dancer is floating on air, a delightful sight!

There was a lot of influence coming in from different cultures at this time as well. The American Ballet Theatre, under the artistic direction of Mikhail Baryshnikov, was introducing a bold new look for ballet, blending contemporary movements with those traditional dance steps we all know and love. This time period saw amazing fusion!

Let's not forget the rise of street ballet, my favourite – street dancing with the style and grace of ballet, just as I dance at my class each week! The year 1987, oh it’s amazing! This is a dance-loving era where ballet has stepped outside of the traditional studio! Just like this pink tutu-loving girl – my dance routine is part of a vibrant and energetic community that goes beyond a single dance studio! It's a joyous mix of dance steps and bold style in tutus and sneakers. It is just how I love it!

A touch of 80s glam - The Tutu's Style Makeover! Just a little glimpse of fashion – have you seen the new ballet fashion trend? – tutus adorned with metallic shimmer or a colourful splash of polka dots. So, it's the classic shape we love – the perfect romantic look – but then that added zing, making every twirl a glamorous event! That’s what I call bringing our past to the present, that’s how my personal #TutuTuesday ballet collection gets inspired.

Remember - - If you are feeling like wearing something super pretty and special
- When you want to add a bit of magic and sparkle to your everyday. - It doesn't matter if it's a fancy occasion or simply running errands ... just wear your very own pink tutu! The only thing better than a ballerina is a ballerina wearing a tutu, especially a pink one!

So, that is all from me this #TutuTuesday, until next week's adventure! Now, time to grab some fabulous snacks (I think it’s going to be cake!) and join me in my pink tutu for this evening's performance. Don’t forget to catch me if you see me wearing pink as I’m twirling in the streets. Let me know if you want a photo taken. See you at the next #TutuTuesday!

Remember – the magic is all in the twirl!

Love, Emma
