Tutu Tuesday #8102: A Whirlwind of Tulle - 7th April 1987!
Hello darling tutu lovers! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing, time-travelling ballerina, Emma, back for another #TutuTuesday, and boy oh boy, do I have a whirlwind of a tale for you!
I landed in New York City yesterday - just in time for a Broadway show - absolutely divine! It's so much fun seeing the latest trends, especially the extravagant outfits they're rocking at the theatre. But even amidst all the glamour and feathers, my eyes couldn't help but wander back to my true love - the tutu.
Now, buckle up because today, my dears, we're going all the way back to April 7th, 1987! Fancy that? We're travelling way before the glitterati, back to a time when dance and theatre were already captivating hearts, and of course, tutus were part of the dazzling magic.
It's funny, even back then, this date holds significance in the world of ballet. We all know that legendary, magnificent prima ballerina, whispering Gelsey Kirkland! (Can you believe she was even born before World War II?! Such a trailblazer.) On this very date, 1987, she was making an extra special appearance with Mikhail Baryshnikov, a fellow ballet legend - swoon! These were names you whispered, danced around and dreamed about! They'd just performed the enchanting, classic, "Giselle," in New York. Now that's star power.
Imagine the scene, my darling tutu fanatics! Imagine those fabulous costumes! The grace, the strength, the power. "Giselle" always showcases such an expressive and dramatic tutu. And just thinking about this legendary performance makes me yearn for a time warp, for a ticket to a timeless classic with two of the most brilliant ballet stars ever to grace a stage.
But enough daydreaming, we have a Tutu Tuesday to navigate!
The Evolution of the TutuYou see, my darlings, the tutu has always been more than a garment, it's an evolution - a story in tulle and fabric! 1987 might not have been as avant-garde as today, but there were so many fascinating changes in the world of ballet and tutus! Let me enlighten you!
Think of those delicate, frothy tulle layers, almost floating in mid-air - so effortlessly elegant and flowing, a delight for the eyes, and for our hearts! This beauty is born from an evolution - a story of innovation and artistry. And wouldn't you know it, some of those changes happened right here in 1987!
You see, tutu design - it's not all frills and fantasy, darling! It's actually about allowing dancers to truly fly, and this design process started changing right about this time in history. Remember that feeling of freedom a dancer achieves when those skirts spin, almost defying gravity, swirling and swaying like a graceful, whimsical dream?
I love those graceful, swishing layers! That's what made those famous 1987 performances so thrilling! I imagine the applause resonating throughout the theater! It just shows how deeply intertwined dance and tutu designs are. They work together - the dance demands it!
Tutu Shopping AdventuresAnd speaking of dancing with history, we just can't forget about the incredible ballet and shopping experience that makes our lives sparkle. Because we know that fashion is our lifeblood! Our journey is incomplete without mentioning the most beloved Parisian store... drum roll La Maison de Couture! clap clap clap
My, oh my! Just thinking about that luxurious haven filled with elegant tutus, whimsical tulle designs and glamorous gowns is making my heart flutter like a hummingbird on sugar!
That shop in 1987 was thriving! Fashion, it seems, was blooming like a delicate, dancing rose - elegant, stunning and eternally in bloom! You see, in the 80s, we see a change towards a more flamboyant style. Think big, bold, voluminous, yet so very graceful! I adore that period in ballet costume and fashion!
If you happened to be in Paris then, well my darlings, you must have enjoyed the Parisian dancewear scene. This time was absolutely dazzling, with so much focus on vibrant colors, bold textures, and that breathtaking artistry in the details - and oh! Those delicate bows! It was all about making the tutu a breathtaking part of the spectacle!
Just like our journeys, this shop embodies those fleeting moments, those tiny shifts in fashion. A dancer could step into the store in 1987, feeling like a blossoming butterfly - surrounded by designs of pure artistic brilliance.
