Tutu Tuesday: A Blast From The Past, #8104
Hey tutu-lovers! 🩰💕 It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, back again for another fabulous #TutuTuesday!
This week, I'm whisking us all back to April 21st, 1987, for a tutu-tastic trip down memory lane! Imagine, 1987 - the big hair, the shoulder pads, the legendary music. Let's dive into the tutu world of this iconic year!
It's been quite a journey for me, but thankfully my trusty time travel portal hasn't let me down - a good thing, because I've got some amazing tutu stories to share. You won't believe this, but today, in London (where else for a ballet adventure?!) , Grease is being revived at the Dominion Theatre. This musical phenomenon has captivated audiences since the 1970s, and it’s set to ignite a wave of rock 'n' roll tutu energy.
As I wandered through the bustling West End, it was impossible to miss the excitement. I couldn't resist the call of Covent Garden where a breathtaking performance of The Sleeping Beauty was taking centre stage. It's one of those ballets that just takes your breath away. All those fluffy, swishy tutus are pure enchantment, and with the iconic Tchaikovsky score playing, the atmosphere was electrifying.
Speaking of enchantments, this was the week the beautiful Cats musical was unveiled at the New London Theatre! Imagine a stage full of feline creatures in fabulous tutus. I mean, it’s truly mesmerizing, isn't it? Who wouldn't be entranced by that sight?! It’s all thanks to Andrew Lloyd Webber – this musical genius gave us another iconic theatrical masterpiece with a stunning cast of costumed dancers. I’m still swooning!
You know how much I love shopping for ballet shoes and everything that sparkles. And London always knows how to satisfy that craving. But wait - there was so much more than ballet! On the 21st of April in 1987, everyone was talking about fashion trends like bold colours and leggings. But hey, you can't really go wrong with the bright colours and patterns when you're aiming for that 1980s feel! Just try to imagine all those bright, shiny sequins on a gorgeous tutu!
Oh! It just dawned on me, 1987 is also the year we saw the first edition of a little-known fashion magazine called The Face. Now, while it wasn’t strictly about tutus, it was about challenging fashion norms and promoting cutting edge design, much like I’m doing here in this #TutuTuesday blog. I believe that a tutu can express individuality and embrace unique style – just like the styles presented in that iconic magazine!
You know what else made April 21st, 1987 truly special? The weather! It's a good thing I had a bright pink, sequined tutu on because, well, let's just say that a spot of April sunshine always perks things up! Imagine a sunny day, beautiful ballet shoes on your feet and you're just about to waltz down the street to a shop, tutu twirling away, as the people stare - just fabulous.
As I continue on my time travel adventures, one thing's for certain - my love of ballet, fashion, and pink tutus is stronger than ever! Every time I visit the past, I see that there has always been something special about ballet. I truly hope that, as we celebrate our own history of dance, we'll keep finding ways to innovate, express ourselves and inspire others!
Oh, before I forget - don't forget to check back next #TutuTuesday for a new ballet story. I can't wait to share more amazing adventures in the history of the tutu with all you fantastic followers. 💖✨ Until then, keep twirling!
