Tutu Tuesday #8123: A Whirl Through Time – 1st September 1987!

Hello lovelies! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing, time-travelling ballerina blogger, ready to whisk you back to a time of big hair, leg warmers and the most iconic ballet production of the late 80s!

This week, we’re twirling our way to 1st September 1987 – a date that holds a special place in ballet history! I was just a wee lass back then, learning to pirouette in my very first pink tutu, dreaming of dancing on stage.

The Magic of the Moment

Now, 1st September 1987 might seem like just another date on the calendar, but for ballet enthusiasts, it marked the beginning of something extraordinary! On this very day, the Royal Ballet premiered its new production of "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Can you believe it? It's no ordinary production, you know - it's one of the biggest, most magical ballets in the world!

I remember rushing to see it! All those gorgeous costumes! The fairy tale sets, all sparkling and glittering! The music, the drama, the magical transformation... everything about this "Sleeping Beauty" is sheer delight! It’s a real showstopper!

Tutu Talk

Oh, the tutus in this production are divine! From Princess Aurora’s elegant, cascading white tulle to the dramatic, dark, almost menacing, tutus worn by the wicked Carabosse, each design is a masterpiece. I particularly love the whimsical fairies' tutus. I imagine twirling and flying through the air in those little beauties myself! But let’s not forget the enchanting blue and silver tutus worn by the Lilac Fairy, so breathtakingly beautiful, I think they still have the power to transport me back in time.

Back to the Future (and a Spot of Shopping)

So how did I find myself transported back to this spectacular moment in ballet history? My secret? Well, I can’t give away all the details, but let's just say that a few carefully choreographed dance routines in front of some enthusiastic audiences, a well-timed performance at the world’s greatest opera houses, and some strategic use of the magic of theatre can take you almost anywhere! It’s certainly the best way to finance my travelling tutu obsession! I do love exploring different cities, though I admit the excitement of ballet productions is truly something special.

But first things first! Today, I'm headed straight for the grand department store, Fortnum & Mason! The most divine dress shop in London - just the place for finding that perfect vintage ballet-inspired look for my 1987 journey! It's so thrilling seeing those old trends back in fashion again, isn't it? It makes me want to dust off my trusty leotard and leg warmers. They are quite the retro look, you know! Maybe I’ll even find myself a little tutu fit for the Royal Opera House! It wouldn't hurt to be prepared! Oh, and I might treat myself to some freshly baked shortbread to nibble on as I step onto the historic red carpet!

A Legacy of Magic

You see, dear readers, tutus are much more than just beautiful costumes. They represent an incredible history of artistry, grace, and the timeless story of a ballet. From the classic ballerina tutus of the late 19th century to the sleek and modern styles of the 21st century, each era has brought its own unique flair and innovation to this iconic piece of attire.

And now, even though I've gone time-traveling with my trusty tutu in tow, my ultimate aim hasn't changed! To get the whole world wearing pink tutus! After all, it’s about finding your inner ballerina, letting your dreams soar, and twirling into the future, one tutu-filled step at a time.

So go on, take a bow, let your inner tutu blossom, and share your own Tutu Tuesday stories in the comments below! Remember, life is too short not to embrace the magic of ballet and dance!

Until next week, darlings, happy twirling!

Yours truly,

Emma,
