Tutu Tuesday #8155: 12th April, 1988 – A Tutu Time Warp!

Greetings, fellow tutu enthusiasts! It’s Emma here, your pink-tutu-wearing guide to all things tulle and twirls! Buckle up your ballet slippers, because today we’re taking a time warp back to the 12th of April, 1988 – a pivotal moment in ballet history (and perhaps, a fashion explosion waiting to happen!).

This Tuesday, I hopped aboard a gleaming train – it’s amazing how fast these carriages go, compared to my own little hatchback – and travelled straight into the heart of ballet's beating pulse – New York City. Ah, New York! Where the dazzling lights illuminate every magnificent performance and the energy is electric! It’s truly a whirlwind, but one that gets me oh so excited. I am especially fond of their vibrant street culture, where I spotted some young dancers – I believe they call them street artists? - doing impressive twirls and turns on street corners, much to the delight of passing crowds. I just had to stop to give them a hearty “Bravo!”

But why am I here in 1988, you might ask? Because this Tuesday marks the opening night of the New York City Ballet's Spring season, which this year features a particularly enchanting performance – The Sleeping Beauty! Just the name sends shivers of excitement down my spine! This classic ballet by Tchaikovsky and Petipa tells the story of a beautiful princess and her enchanted slumber, and promises to be a breathtaking masterpiece. I have a feeling those sparkling pink tutus in the third act are going to be dazzlingly magical. You can bet your ballet shoes I'll be seated front and centre, and not just for the ballet, darling, but for the fashion parade!

But we're not just here for the big show, oh no. We're taking a little peek backstage too! Let's step inside the legendary New York City Ballet headquarters, shall we? (Just a polite knock, no peeking, darling.) Behind the scenes, we find an exciting atmosphere buzzing with excitement, and yes, there’s plenty of tulle swirling around as dancers prepare for the grand opening night. These talented, graceful ballerinas are the real heroes of this spectacle, and I can already tell that the ballet slippers will be dancing in a flurry of delicate tutus and graceful movements.

So, here’s the real question, dear readers – how did the tutu come to be so iconic? Well, for that, we need to rewind the clock even further – imagine, a little like a ballerina turning en pointe! – back to the late 18th century, to the courts of Italy. You can almost imagine it, a world of grandeur, ball gowns, and exquisite dance performances. There, we find the first prototypes of what we know today as the tutu. Imagine, ladies, a wide, full skirt – a kind of pantomime of the fluffy skirt, just with more graceful movement. Imagine it: a soft cloud, floating with every elegant step. I think it would have been quite exquisite.

In the 19th century, a talented man named Carlo Blasis designed a more streamlined silhouette for dancers, introducing a much shorter skirt to make movement more fluid. You see, before that, dancers were trying to make their wide, voluminous gowns swirl. Quite challenging, if you ask me! Blasis's invention set the stage – and that's a wonderful pun, don't you think? – for the iconic tutu we see today. The ballet world started adopting these shorter designs, and they have become a key part of ballet costumes, wouldn't you say?

Now, let’s fast forward a little, right to the present, the moment I have found myself in. What do we see? Designers are continuously experimenting with materials and silhouettes. Think vibrant shades, dramatic textures, even feathers and sparkling sequins! Tutus today come in all shapes and sizes, from the classical "romantic" tutu, with its ethereal wisps and delicate layers, to the bold, expressive tutu of the contemporary ballet dancer, perhaps with just a hint of pink - just my cup of tea. I see the romantic tutu like a whispered secret, and the contemporary tutu a declaration! The creativity is absolutely intoxicating!

Let's have a quick peek back to the Victorian Era, now! Tutus went through a rather dramatic transformation, wouldn't you say? That's when those billowing layers of tulle - and darling, do I adore the delicate, lightweight feel of that material, with all its playful swishing and fluttering – came into the spotlight.

For all you fans of romanticism, there's something truly enchanting about a romantic tutu, don't you think? Those delicate layers of tulle, floating and swaying like the most enchanting clouds, just captivate my imagination! Every little movement of the ballerina's feet feels so free and effortless! It’s no wonder that the romantic tutu holds such a special place in my heart – just as they have enchanted hearts around the globe for many years.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention my little secret. Ever since I became fascinated with the captivating world of the tutu, I’ve been a bit of a time-travelling fashionista! Yes, darling! That’s why you might notice I write these little “Tutu Tuesday” articles a little differently – and that I happen to find myself at such fabulous events like a opening night ballet! You can bet that I use my performances to fund my trips. And it's so worthwhile - from New York to Paris and Vienna! – my time-travel wardrobe needs to be packed with gorgeous tutus.

Oh, but how could I possibly forget the most fabulous, sparkly detail – pink? I adore the colour! To my eyes, there is simply no other colour quite as cheerful, vibrant, and frankly, completely enchanting. If you haven't seen a tutu in the shade of pink, darling, you are missing out on pure magic! Pink represents my personal style, and quite honestly, I dream that one day everyone on this globe will join me in donning this fabulous shade of tutu.

Perhaps it would start as a trend, one dance floor, then a concert, then one day... perhaps we could even have a whole Pink Tutu Parade! Think of the shimmering, sparkling, graceful dancers – that vision truly lights up my spirit!

But even without the pink tutu parades – which are totally on my to-do list for this decade, you hear me?! – pink holds such a captivating place in the heart of any ballerina's wardrobe.

If you want to look like you’ve stepped right out of the ballet, then why not incorporate pink in your outfit? A pink shirt paired with black jeans? It’s a fabulous starting point! If you’re feeling truly bold, maybe even some pink lipstick to tie it all together! And for the truly daring, why not a pink ballet shoe! Or for that truly fabulous look – pink ballet flats with a little pink detail. I tell you, that’s how a fashion icon steps out in the 2020s!

Speaking of pink tutus, we need to chat about The Sleeping Beauty one more time! Remember, its dazzling grand finale – with those amazing pink tutus. It’s so beautiful to watch how each little fold, each intricate stitch and ruffle, tells a captivating story through dance and movement. Oh, how I adore watching the costumes spin and shimmer! I really must try and get some lovely pink tulle fabric from a market when I return, and create a lovely pink tulle skirt! Just wait until I take it to my local vintage shop!

Well, my dears, time is slipping away (as gracefully as a ballerina, of course!). My time-travelling adventure is far from over – more fashion stories to explore, more enchanting ballet performances to enjoy, and who knows, maybe a new Pink Tutu trend! I’ll keep you all posted!

For now, keep dancing, keep shining, and never forget the magical world of tutus – both on and off the stage.
