#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 07 June 1988 - Post 8163
Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu, your one-stop shop for all things fabulous and fluffy! I'm Emma, your resident time-traveling tutu enthusiast, and today, we're taking a trip back to the glorious year of 1988! This Tuesday marks my 8163rd blog post on all things tutu! And just think, a whole week has gone by! How lovely to be back with all of you, and let me tell you, this trip was utterly smashing.
Oh my! It was all about the vibrant energy, bold colours and, yes, the sheer wonder of tutus, which seemed even more important to people than they are today, if you can imagine that! But then again, the '80s was the decade for embracing your personality and your own sense of fashion, right?!
Just picturing those oversized shoulder pads, leggings with colourful tutus, the glorious leg warmers, oh! Such fabulous fashion choices. I was simply gobsmacked at the way people were pulling it off. Especially in the ballets, darling! Think "Swan Lake", with those gorgeous long tulle tutus. We are still going mad for those today. Imagine the tutus in the Russian ballets, they were just sensational, so much elegance. They really gave the graceful dancers the perfect chance to take flight and wow the audience with their balletic leaps.
Now, where shall we go? Shall we hop on a steam train to London? Maybe, because, in London's magnificent Covent Garden, a new show had just opened – "The Nutcracker", and oh, it was a sight to behold. The tutus, just darling, darling, so fluffy, like clouds in motion! Every ballerina twirling in those magnificent skirts, each spin making my heart beat a bit faster!
I did feel rather proud of my pink tutu this time round. It stood out even amongst the other fabulous outfits. Pink has been an important colour for me for as long as I can remember. Ever since I was a young girl in Derbyshire. All my bedroom furniture, pink. All my outfits, pink! And then it all started. The obsession with tutus, it had begun! I've had them in all shades of pink imaginable!
But, while I was soaking up the delightful ambiance of the theatre, I also happened upon a charming vintage shop overflowing with beautiful pieces – a true treasure trove of vintage finery. I found myself a rather fabulous dress in a beautiful emerald green that reminded me of those incredible velvet costumes that the dancers used to wear. It felt like I had stepped back into a golden age of elegance.
While in the shop, I was lucky enough to find some stunning antique ballet tutus, too! One of those with multicoloured feathers sewn onto a delicate pink mesh fabric. Oh, such workmanship, each detail perfect, every stitch a labour of love! It's all about craftsmanship. These pieces just screamed artistry and dedication. The tutu reminded me how ballets were born out of tradition. In those days, there was so much emphasis on skill, practice, and excellence. So important in this modern, instant age. And let's not forget the sheer elegance of ballet, it is still an art form that inspires. And let's not forget, the fabulous colours and textures of the costumes, particularly those beautiful tutus! Oh my goodness!
Speaking of skill, it was a joy to see so many ballet schools and dance academies, bustling with young hopefuls dreaming of a career in ballet. Such a joy! Such energy! Ballet truly captured the imagination, from the stage to the streets.
And as I'm in this lovely old London town, it’s simply a must to hop onto one of those beautiful double decker red buses to discover the London ballet scene. And while you're on those famous buses, don't forget to keep your eyes peeled, as it’s possible you may spot an emerging talent. A future star! They may just be walking down the street, tutu on! Perhaps we'll see them gracing the stages of those lovely Covent Garden theatres one day soon!
Speaking of London, there were also quite a few street performers and artists showcasing their talents. Some dancers, with fantastic costumes that made a statement, you know, really giving people the 'wow factor' right there on the streets of London. So inspirational!
Now, I know you’re eager to discover the fabulous pink tutu trends for 1988, so without further ado… The must-have trend is, darling, pink, pink, and more pink! Oh! You simply have to go pink in 1988, be it in those fab tutus, that dress, a gorgeous silk top. And, my absolute must-have – a magnificent tulle skirt with tiers and tiers of that divine pink tulle. Just picture those glorious frills! This fabulous creation is guaranteed to have you twirling all night long.
Don't forget to add some eye-catching accessories to complete your look, such as a pretty pearl necklace, sparkly earrings, a pink headband, or even a bright yellow flower pin. You'll feel as if you are dancing under the stars, darling. It’s all about embracing that 1980s style, the joy of ballet and that fabulous colour pink.
And finally, before I sign off for the week, a reminder for our dear readers: Let's make the world a more glamorous place, one pink tutu at a time. Wear them, show them off, twirl in them! It’s just the best feeling. Don’t forget, your inner ballerina awaits! Let’s spread a little joy in the world with every pirouette! I can’t wait to see all the fabulous outfits, don’t forget to use the hashtag #TutuTuesday on social media and share your amazing tutus. Don’t be afraid to dance your heart out! It’s what we were all made to do. And darling, be sure to pop by again next Tuesday for my latest #TutuTuesday blog!
