Tutu Tuesday #8166: Back to the Future of the Tutu - June 28th 1988!
Hey gorgeous ballerinas and tutu enthusiasts! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink-tutu-wearing time-travelling blogger. I'm so excited to take you back to June 28th 1988, a time of big hair, leg warmers and… well, you guessed it, amazing tutus!
I hopped onto the train, leaving behind the bustling streets of Covent Garden, my new favourite haunt for finding exquisite ballet costumes (although I can't resist popping into a vintage shop whenever I see one - always the chance of a real tutu gem!), and journeyed through the portal that’s a part of every time-travelling ballet enthusiast’s life (it’s a secret, okay!).
London in the late 80s was all about energy and excitement. The music scene was booming, fashion was flamboyant and the theatre was vibrant with some truly dazzling performances. Of course, there was plenty of tutus in the air as well.
Speaking of tutus… let’s jump straight into the real reason I love travelling back in time. The tutus! In 1988, the tutu was at the peak of its fashion power. It wasn't just a stage costume, it was a symbol of pure, feminine joy and grace. There were layers of tulle on everyone from princesses to pop stars, and I must admit I am a huge fan of that iconic image of the ‘80s supermodel Cindy Crawford wearing a huge tulle skirt over black leggings… Pure tutus magic!
Tutus in Performance:
On this specific June 28th 1988, you could have caught the iconic American Ballet Theatre at the Metropolitan Opera House, dancing the ever-beautiful "Swan Lake." Can you imagine the sight? Those graceful, elegant dancers floating across the stage in the most fabulous tutu creations… Oh, I just wish I could see that in person. (Maybe next time I travel, I'll grab a front-row ticket!)
Fashion & Fun:
But tutus weren't just for the stage, they were infiltrating everyday life. You might be shocked to learn that on this very day, 1988, a magazine called "The New Yorker" featured a photoshoot of their contributing writer on a public street wearing a bright, red-sequined tutu, her face beaming! That's pure tutu power!
I also found the coolest souvenir – a little hand-drawn tutu, attached to a key ring, just the perfect keepsake.
The Colour Pink:
Let’s be honest, pink was definitely making a statement in the late ‘80s! I was particularly drawn to the playful colour palette – the sweet candy shades of the time. A bit more sugar rush than what we might be used to today. But hey, I wouldn't mind adding a little bit of pink to my current wardrobe - a touch of retro-chic sweetness never hurts.
And the tutu, well, that is where it all begins. The perfect pink tutu - it really makes me feel alive, don’t you agree? I just wish there were more places where people could confidently rock a pink tutu without fear.
Final Thoughts:
Travelling back to 1988 made me realise the tutu was truly on fire, just like it is right now. Fashion circles in 2023 have rediscovered the magic and excitement of this garment. Tutus are a beautiful reflection of creativity and empowerment! It’s a reminder that every time we step out in our twirling best, we celebrate the joy and magic of dance.
Until next time, dear tutu lovers, stay twirling, and don’t be afraid to spread your pink tulle wings and fly!
