#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Blast from the Past! 🩰✨
Hello my lovely tutu-loving friends! It's Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time-traveling ballerina, ready to take you on another whimsical journey through the glorious history of the tutu!
This week, we're stepping back to 13th September 1988 – a time of feathered hair, leg warmers, and yes, you guessed it, glorious tutus! 💖
This #TutuTuesday takes us on a journey back to the 80s, a decade brimming with creativity, music, and a passion for all things fashion. This was the decade where the tutu truly exploded into popular culture! And don’t forget, we’re right in the middle of the tutus evolution from romantic to neoclassical – but let’s not go too deep, I promise not to bore you with too much ballet history in this post. You can read more in post 7975 of the blog!
The Power of the Pink Tutu!
In 1988, tutus were everywhere! From ballet stages to music videos, they were a symbol of femininity, grace, and a touch of playful rebellion. Now, you all know pink is my absolute favourite colour, so obviously, I had to travel back in time and see the fabulous tutus for myself! It's quite the trip, I can tell you.
Think about all the beautiful ballets you see on the telly. Well, tutus had the same impact! Whether it was a performance by the Royal Ballet, the Bolshoi, or the glorious Kirov Ballet (now the Mariinsky Ballet, oh dear!), there was a stunning range of tulle fabrics, colours, and styles that just made my heart sing! ✨
Tutu-licious Fashion!
This was a time where designers and fashion houses weren’t afraid to experiment, and the tutu was their perfect canvas for creative expression. I spent days at Harrods in London, marveling at all the tutu-inspired designs. Honestly, my tutu collection grew rather dramatically that year! 🩰
Fun Fact Did you know that even the most unlikely fashion houses started adding touches of tutu-ness to their designs? We had Jean Paul Gaultier showcasing bold tutu-inspired skirts alongside classic menswear, and Christian Lacroix taking everyone's breath away with their extravagant couture gowns with just a hint of tulle magic.
Oh, and I couldn’t resist getting a few new tutus, one to go to see 'The Nutcracker', and one for the new 'Swan Lake' - what a glorious ballet - that is one of my all time favourite classics - I'd give it a hundred pink tutus!
I must mention that it wouldn’t be a tutu adventure without heading to Covent Garden. Now, 1988 saw some truly remarkable performances at The Royal Opera House, and let me tell you, it was hard to resist a cheeky detour for a night at the ballet. The magic of live performance truly ignited my soul. But shhh, that’s a secret we share… 🤫
A Dance through Time: Tutues Everywhere
Looking back, this was truly a glorious time for tutus. They were the epitome of femininity, a symbol of the power and freedom that women were embracing. You can't argue that, I guess. From the stage to the street, tutus were everywhere, and in the most fantastic array of colors and textures. Even if they weren’t worn with fluffy pink feathers or sparkly tights, that didn't stop them from being a beautiful and glamorous part of everyone’s lives, at least mine they were! 💖
So, here’s to the tutus of 1988! 🥂 And if you ever have a chance, find yourself a pink tutu, head out to a ballet performance, and let yourself be transported to a world of grace and joy! It truly is a fantastic thing! 🩰✨
Love, Emma 💖
