#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through 1989! 🩰✨
Hello darlings, and welcome back to your favourite pink-tutu-wearing blogger, Emma, for another fabulous #TutuTuesday! This week we're taking a trip back in time to February 28th, 1989. Just imagine the excitement! I can practically hear the strains of the overture swirling through the air as I travel back to the grand theatres of the world.
Oh, it's simply thrilling! Every trip in the time machine brings new fashion inspiration. What trends will this week bring?
The Year of the Tutu
1989 was a grand year for ballet! We had some absolute stars gracing the stage, the likes of Misty Copeland and Sergei Polunin weren’t even twinkling yet, but some of the greats, like Mikhail Baryshnikov, Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, were still bringing the magic to stages across the world. Oh how I would have loved to be a part of that era! To have witnessed these legends in the flesh.
Of course, it’s not just the dancers who take center stage in the world of ballet; there’s also the fashion, darling. The tutus were truly fabulous in 1989. Lush layers of tulle, oh, such artistry and drama! It's no wonder the tutu has stood the test of time, a symbol of elegance and ethereal beauty.
London Fashion & The West End
This week, my travels have brought me to the heart of London, the epicentre of style and theatre. The London Fashion Week showings are taking place in a whirlwind of prints and textures. Big shoulders are a defining trend, as is the power of pink! (I do love a colour that reflects my very own tutu-clad soul). This trend of pink permeated the fashion of the time – from Barbie dolls and hot pink accessories to fuchsia clothing – everything was a burst of girly hues. And, of course, I adore it. I can imagine myself swirling across the dance floor in a fabulously voluminous pink tutu, twirling and pirouetting under the glittering chandelier of the Royal Opera House.
Now, I've been popping into West End shows, darling. On February 28th, 1989, "Cats" is drawing in huge crowds! It's no wonder - the original choreography, the costumes, the whole thing! Such a fantastical, dazzling show - it's no surprise this Broadway classic has become a global sensation. And I, of course, took full advantage of the atmosphere. A pink tutu makes a statement wherever you go - especially amidst the glam and glitz of London’s West End.
Speaking of London, have you seen the newest designs coming from the UK? Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano were starting to make their mark, creating some really spectacular clothing for both men and women! The daring use of silhouettes and the incorporation of strong motifs. So incredibly chic and sophisticated. A fabulous time to be alive and a perfect opportunity to add some fabulous new pieces to my wardrobe, all from my time-travelling, ballet-inspired shopping sprees.
The Tutu, A Constant
While we can’t all wear the majestic tutu in our daily lives (though, we should! How lovely!), the tutu’s design elements are still making waves across the fashion world today. We see the classic ballet-inspired styles with its layers of tulle appearing in designer pieces for day and evening. It's wonderful to see how a symbol of dance, and a mainstay of our #TutuTuesday posts, continues to inspire fashion and design!
Speaking of #TutuTuesday - if you're looking for inspiration and a touch of whimsical pinkness in your life, I urge you to join our #TutuTuesday movement! Embrace the power of pink, don a tutu and get ready to swirl!
Fashion Tip: Take a cue from the trends of 1989! We love a bold shoulder or a statement skirt in our favourite shade of pink!
