#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A 1989 Blast From The Past!

Hello darlings, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your go-to destination for all things tutu, fabulous, and downright pink! It's your favourite Derbyshire lass, Emma, back with another juicy delve into the delightful world of the ballet tutu, and let me tell you, this week's #TutuTuesday is particularly scrumptious.

We're time-hopping back to 1989, a year positively dripping with fabulous fashion (shoulder pads! leg warmers!) and an exciting time for ballet, too! As usual, my trusty time-travel suitcase is overflowing with sparkly outfits and, naturally, several tutus - after all, you can't travel to a bygone era without a fabulously appropriate ensemble, now can you?

Now, grab a cuppa, pull up a seat on the chaise longue, and prepare to be absolutely smitten! Today, we're diving into the tutu trends of 1989!

1989: A Year of Tutu-licious Styles

This was a truly fabulous year for tutus, my lovelies! If we take a peek at the most popular styles in 1989, you'd be surprised to see how much echoes of the tutu trends of the '80s still live on! But we're talking major glam. Think sequins, lace, and oh-so-much tulle! Let's delve into what the tutus were like and how the amazing dancers wore them.

  • The Romantic Revival: The year was graced with the graceful elegance of Romantic tutu styles. Think billowing layers of tulle, flowing ribbons, and intricate patterns, making for breathtaking moments on stage! Remember Margot Fonteyn - an absolute legend? Think long tulle and lots of delicate lace - the definition of ballerina chic!

  • Neoclassical Beauty: Alongside the Romantic Revival, the world witnessed a flourishing of Neoclassical ballet, marked by its emphasis on clean lines, geometric shapes, and the beauty of the dancer's natural movement. These styles featured a slightly more fitted, structured design, emphasising the ballerina's sleek, athletic physique, yet still gloriously elegant.

  • Colour, Glamour, and Sequins: Forget understated in 1989! The fashion world, and the ballet world, were all about colour! And my goodness, you couldn't have too many sequins! These shimmery embellishments were used generously, adorning tutus like jewels on a royal crown. Bold colour was definitely the flavour of the month - you wouldn't find a muted ballet tutu for love nor money! It's so good for you to remember just how bold colour became for dancers!

A 1989 Time-Hop Treat: The Royal Ballet and More!

Travelling through time in my trusty pink tutu has landed me right at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden on 13th June 1989. Can you imagine the excitement? And it's a balletic extravaganza that I couldn't possibly miss! It's a night of spectacular dance, with the Royal Ballet presenting Tchaikovsky's majestic Swan Lake, and a certain Miss Sylvie Guillem! Let me tell you, it’s nothing short of spellbinding! The tutus in Swan Lake are pure perfection – just the right amount of drama with long flowing lines and lots of layers, absolutely divine!

  • Fashion, A Trip To Harrods: To keep up with my fashion knowledge, a trip to Harrods in London was absolutely necessary! (You can't be a real ballet fashionista without visiting a world-class department store!) There I saw all the newest fabrics, all the most fabulous sequins - a true haven for tutus! And don't get me started on the shoes! Point shoes, dance slippers - you name it, Harrods had it, and oh so very, very glam! I'm certain that if tutus had been sold at Harrods, I'd have been sorely tempted to empty my suitcase of its hard-earned ballet-performance income for some real vintage 1989 treasures!
