#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post #8241: A Little Trip Back in Time 🩰💖

Bonjour, my darling tutu-loving friends! It’s Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing, ballet-obsessed time traveller, back again with another thrilling trip down #TutuTuesday memory lane!

This week, my darling, I’m whisking us back to the wonderful world of ballet on 5th December 1989. Can you believe it, over thirty years ago?! I can almost hear the whisper of tulle, the pitter-patter of pointe shoes, and the oh-so-lovely strains of Tchaikovsky!

Just picture this: December has arrived, and the air is crisp and chilly. Even in my time travelling attire (pink tutu, naturally, with a chic fur stole for the added warmth - because, even in the past, a girl needs her style!), I’m feeling a little bit nippy. But oh, my darlings, the excitement! I’ve arrived in Paris for a long weekend, ready to dive head-first into the magnificent world of French ballet! And wouldn't you know it, there's a brilliant show playing at the Opéra Garnier that evening: The Nutcracker, with its swirling snowflakes, sugary sweets, and breathtaking choreography. Who could resist?!

Before heading to the theatre, of course, a little shopping is absolutely non-negotiable. The Champs-Élysées is absolutely overflowing with incredible boutiques, just brimming with the most elegant outfits, sparkly accessories, and shoes to die for. This, my lovelies, is why the 80s were truly a fashion era to remember!

And oh, the outfits! My own sartorial choice for this magical trip back in time? A shimmering silver and pink sequinned blouse tucked into a swirling, voluminous, black tutu. It’s a bold look, certainly, but just a little touch of sparkle is needed, wouldn't you agree? It’s just so fun! My pink shoes match perfectly, of course, and I can’t forget the most delightful floral beret to add that je ne sais quoi!

Speaking of style, the ballet costumes themselves were so inspiring in 1989! I've never been a big fan of minimalist costumes – they're just so... bland. But back then, it was all about decadence. Think: flowing silks, luxurious fabrics, shimmering sequins, intricate beading and show-stopping feathered headdresses! A true ballet enthusiast’s dream!

Speaking of The Nutcracker, it was a real hit in 1989, darling! It was such a joyful and exciting spectacle, and truly captivating audiences everywhere. If you can, do treat yourself to a performance in a theatre. Even watching it in your home on a big screen, is pure magic! Just remember, when watching the production, keep your eyes open for the iconic Christmas tree - don't be fooled by its small appearance, for it grows tall in the most magical way during the production, in a ballet magical moment I'll never forget!

After all, even thirty years on, ballet’s power to enchant and inspire remains unchanged, doesn’t it, darling? It's still an art form that truly captures the magic of childhood wonder, doesn't it?

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some truly incredible tutus waiting for me to try on, all fresh from 1989!

Until next Tuesday, my dear tutu-loving friends,

Keep on dancing and embracing life in your pinkest and most wonderful tutus!

XOXO, Emma
