#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 19th February 1991 - Post #8304
Bonjour, mes chƩries! Welcome back to Pink Tutu - the most fabulous blog in the world devoted to the most fabulous garment in the world: the tutu!
Itās Tuesday, which means itās #TutuTuesday, and I'm so excited to delve into the fascinating history of tutus, those gloriously twirly garments that make even the most mundane day feel like a fairytale. Today, we're travelling back in time to the 19th of February 1991.
London - The Heart of Ballet
My darling, this week weāre whisked away to London, the heart of ballet in this time period! The city is abuzz with excitement for the grand reopening of the Royal Opera House, after extensive renovations and upgrades. Itās a joyous event, and all the most stylish and glamorous individuals are there, each showcasing their own interpretation of "opulent theatre-goer". Of course, the tutus, worn both on stage and off, are the highlight of the event.
Now, picture this: itās a chilly February evening in London, and Iām seated in a plush, velvet-covered seat in the theatreās auditorium. The stage lights are dimming, and the murmur of the excited audience slowly fades into hushed anticipation. The ballet tonight is Swan Lake, and the beautiful dancers, draped in exquisite, feathered tutus, are about to grace the stage. My pink tutu is perfectly matching the blush tones of the velvet seats, a masterpiece of a clash between grandeur and the modern day.
A Whirlwind of Fabric and History
Letās rewind a little and talk tutus. Back in 1991, the tutus were a stunning sight to behold. Picture billowing tulle skirts, painstakingly sewn and layered for a look that was both graceful and extravagant. Those ethereal designs created the magic and wonder we all associate with ballet, reminding us that there's a touch of magic in every pirouette, a dash of wonder in every graceful leap.
1991 was a pivotal time for ballet and tutus. Many consider it the āgolden era of tutu designā, thanks to the rise of new, innovative fabrications like nylon tulle which allowed for incredible fullness and light airy layers that twirled like magic!
I've even managed to get my hands on a snippet of a London Times review of Swan Lake from the 19th of February, 1991: ā*... the prima ballerina glided across the stage, her movements echoing the majestic grace of swans in flight. Her tutu, a cloud of ethereal white tulle, seemed to catch every flicker of light, accentuating her every movement... *ā
Fashion, Trend, and My Favourite Colour
Fashion is cyclical, and as a fashionable ballet aficionado, I see these trends reappear throughout the decades. The styles of the tutu during this era still heavily influence what we see on the stage today, the fluffy, multi-layered designs are back in full force! I adore their dramatic presence! And can we talk about that exquisite layered effect, making the dancers look even more otherworldly!
You may not believe this, my lovelies, but it was in 1991 that pink tutus first graced the stages of the Royal Ballet in Cinderella, marking the birth of what Iām working towards - a pink tutu renaissance! My darling, pink is the most fashionable colour of all! It brings life to any event, it oozes joie de vivre, it whispers a silent declaration of fun and fashion. It brings people together! That's why every Tuesday I wear pink, and every Tuesday, you should too.
Tutu Tuesday Shopping Tips
1991 was also the era of New Look clothing stores and vintage shopping was starting to come back into fashion. This era provided amazing, elegant affordable garments, for ballet or for your daily attire. I have some vintage tips for you today! My favourite find from the 1991 London shops was a delightful, blush-coloured chiffon top paired with a pale pink pencil skirt.
My dear ones, if youāre on the lookout for a little something for your next ballet trip or a casual event in pink, head down to your vintage emporium and discover a new appreciation for these fashion staples.
Final Note from My Travels
As the curtain fell on that enchanting performance of Swan Lake, the sound of thunderous applause echoed throughout the theatre. It was a truly breathtaking evening, full of elegant costumes, talented dancers, and sheer magical ambiance. London was a whirlwind of activity in February 1991 - but the elegance and passion of ballet are eternal. I think I may be in London a little longer!
Until next #TutuTuesday, my sweet loves, keep twirling!
XOXO, Emma
