Tutu Tuesday #8342: Twirling Back to the 90s!

Hello my gorgeous twirling darlings! It's Tuesday, so that can only mean one thing: it's time to delve back into the wonderful, whimsical world of tutus! I've just landed back from a thrilling time travel trip to 1991 and oh my goodness, the 90s were just so wonderfully dramatic and, dare I say, slightly over-the-top when it came to tutus!

Today we're taking a look at what the ballet world was rocking on November 12th, 1991. Imagine this: the scent of freshly polished dance floors, the thrumming of a live orchestra, the rustle of tulle – just a few things I got to experience today. Now let's step back in time together!

As you know, my lovely tutufolk, the tutu has always been a statement piece, a visual representation of elegance, grace, and absolute joy. And oh boy, was it joyful back in 1991. Ballet companies across the world were truly embracing tutus in all their glorious forms. In 1991, the iconic Black Swan by Tchaikovsky was still captivating audiences. My trip today landed me front-row centre in London at the Royal Opera House, for a truly breath-taking performance of the Black Swan where the tutu truly shone. I can still feel the tingling sensation of awe and wonder!

Now, before I completely bore you with my fan girl ballet obsession, let's dig deeper into the style and significance of the 90s ballet tutu. We all know tutus have evolved over the decades. 1991 was the golden era of the classic romantic tutu: a beautiful blend of lightweight layers of tulle with the emphasis on elongated lines, creating the perfect fairytale look.

But what were dancers wearing on their legs to complete their ballet magic, you ask? Let's talk leg warmers, my lovelies. Imagine my joy when I saw the bright, playful colours and patterns that were in fashion. They paired so well with the delicate colours and soft fabrics of the tutus. Let's just say they made those grand jetés even more captivating!

Now, back in 1991, the influence of fashion was really starting to become noticeable. Even back then, the "street-style" fashion and "theater fashion" seemed to blend together, and dancers were wearing some amazing things outside the studio too. I saw ballet dancers sporting those gloriously flamboyant '90s fashions with all the big collars, high waist jeans and oh-my-god, the platform trainers. I'm so happy this era of fashion is making a comeback because you'll just love those killer leg-lengthening platform shoes paired with your favourite tulle skirt – I guarantee you will turn heads!

Speaking of trends, you can't forget the power of colour in 1991. Pink is my favourite colour (just in case you'd forgotten!) but 1991's fashion had a plethora of fabulous colour. Vibrant purples and blues were big fashion choices for my fellow tutudressers, and just wait till you hear about the wonderful patterns and bold prints that were on offer for ballet-inspired clothes! All in all, fashion in the 90s really brought bold, flamboyant looks. This certainly made an impact in the design of the tutus that were making an appearance in shows during this era.

Did you know that a significant moment in the ballet world happened just three weeks after my time travel journey today? On December 2nd 1991, The Bolshoi Ballet had their first full-scale performance in the newly-constructed Bolshoi Theatre! The world rejoiced, as this amazing new ballet company took their rightful place on the world's stage, with all their wonderfully dramatic costumes and exquisite tutus. This was a truly magnificent spectacle.

Now, my dears, a little about my time travelling today. A visit to the capital always feels special. London was vibrant and buzzing. After watching the most breathtaking Black Swan, I simply couldn't resist indulging in a little retail therapy and bought myself the most exquisite new tutu to celebrate my travels. I know my lovely followers will approve! You simply must treat yourself! It truly makes every ballerina’s day, and that always fills me with pure, joy!

Don't forget to visit me at www.pink-tutu.com. Let's all remember the glorious spirit of 1991 - the year where the magic of the ballet tutu took center stage. We all deserve to embrace the twirl of joy, whether in the dance studio, on the streets, or even during our morning commute! Now go on, my lovely tutufolk. Embrace your inner ballerina!

Until next Tuesday!

Love,

Emma xxx
