Tutu Tuesday #8382: Back to the 90s, Baby!

Hello my lovely Tutu Tribe! Welcome to another fabulous #TutuTuesday adventure, straight from the pages of my personal ballet-filled time travel journal! 🩰✨

This week, we're zipping back to 18th August 1992, a glorious time when grunge was still cool, denim was king, and, of course, tutus were ever so gracefully taking the world by storm! I mean, can you imagine?! Tutu trends! Who would've thought!

Let's take a trip back to a world where oversized sweaters met ballet shoes, where platform trainers were all the rage, and tutus held a special place in every fashion-forward heart. 😉

The Glamour of 1992

Now, I’ve just returned from a dazzling show in New York, a trip funded, naturally, by a series of delightful ballet performances across the pond (nothing like a bit of 'Giselle' to pay the train fare). Oh my, the sheer grandeur! The fashion! There I was, surrounded by stylish folk, the kind who wouldn’t be caught dead without a little splash of pink and sparkle (though you know me, always championing a classic white tutu with a dash of hot pink ribbon)!

Imagine, you're at Lincoln Center, watching an iconic ballet with an actual tutus on display, but it's 1992. You know what that means?! Glitter. Big hair. Lots of dramatic eye makeup. The atmosphere is electrifying, almost like a stage in itself, filled with a kaleidoscope of personalities, all coming together to experience the magic of ballet!

And speaking of magic, my Tutu Tribe, 1992 marked the rise of another phenomenal ballerina - Misty Copeland! This wonderful dancer went on to shatter glass ceilings and inspire countless young ballerinas (including myself!) with her captivating talent. I mean, a dancer who started with only four years of formal training to achieve such greatness is truly awe-inspiring. It makes me believe anything is possible. Even a ballerina-themed time travelling fashion blog like mine!

Back in the UK: Time for Tutu Talk!

But hold on a moment, my dears! We can’t just be gushing over ballet and fashion. Let’s delve into the heart of #TutuTuesday, shall we? What were tutus like back in the days of ‘92?

Imagine a world where a midi tutu would be considered groundbreaking! You betcha! This particular style of tutu, just slightly longer than the usual, allowed for a more graceful, more sophisticated kind of movement, even when paired with my favorite pair of trainers!

As for colors, well, the 90s were all about those rich, vibrant hues, darlings. Think lush velvet tutus, a burst of bold purple and ruby red, and just a touch of black to create a more dramatic, fashion-forward look! Imagine pairing that red tutu with a crisp white blouse, my darlings. Simply divine!

Ballet and Fashion in 1992: A Love Story

The magic of ballet in the 90s went beyond just the stage. It was bleeding into the fabric of everyday life, my dear Tutu Tribe. Remember the "Black Swan" dress from the iconic movie "Pretty Woman?" Now that's what I call a tutu inspiration! Or imagine all those stunning sequined and feathered leotards from "Pretty Woman." They were everywhere, all over TV and in fashion magazines! It truly was a tutu boom, and for good reason.

But there’s more! Madonna! Let's not forget the Queen of Pop, my darlings. She wasn’t just rocking the stage, but also giving tutus a whole new, almost edgy look with a unique blend of style and attitude. The fact that a queen like Madonna was so unabashedly in love with the look gave it this fantastic element of rebelliousness! And you know what? Who can say no to that?!

Where do you get a tutu?

The amazing thing about tutus in the 90s, you ask? You could get your hands on them literally anywhere! Remember those vibrant multicoloured tutus? Those were all over in every store. And let's not forget about all the fantastic fashion designers bringing the ballet magic to their lines. Think John Galliano. Think Christian Lacroix. These fabulous designers, along with the iconic fashion editor Isabella Blow, pushed the boundaries of the tutu and gave it a much-needed injection of glamour! It’s this fascinating interplay between high fashion and dance that gave the tutu that edge. That ‘you know what, you can wear a tutu for a night out at the club if you feel like it’ kind of vibe.

Looking Ahead:

Remember my darlings, tutus have always had a special place in my heart, even more so in the 90s. But my travels, oh they continue! Who knows where my next journey takes me, and what hidden treasures of fashion I will find tucked away in the history of tutus!

So, stay tuned! Make sure you check in every Tuesday for another fascinating #TutuTuesday trip into the world of tutus. And remember, always go out and have fun, my darling Tutu Tribe!

Always keep dancing and don't forget, wear that pink tutu with confidence, wherever you are, in whatever era you choose to find yourself.

Your devoted,

Emma x
