#TutuTuesday: A Blast From The Past - 1992! (Blog Post #8396)
Hello my lovely Tutu Twirlers! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu enthusiast, and welcome back to another dazzling #TutuTuesday. This week we're taking a little trip back in time, because as you know, my love for tutus knows no bounds – past, present, or future!
The Year Was 1992…
This week's Tutu Time Travel adventure takes us all the way back to 1992! I just love how different the fashion was back then, with those amazing shoulder pads, neon colours and - dare I say it - slightly dodgy hairstyles. But even amidst the fashion trends of that decade, the graceful twirl of a tutu never goes out of style!
I landed myself right in the heart of London – the centre of everything, and definitely the place to be for all things ballet, back in 1992. Can you imagine, London, buzzing with life and brimming with exciting opportunities for a ballerina like me! The Royal Ballet was just in their 75th anniversary year - what a momentous occasion!
The Big Show:
As luck would have it, the date we've landed on - 24th November 1992 – happened to be the opening night of the Royal Ballet's The Sleeping Beauty production. Now, everyone knows a good sleeping beauty needs a splendid tutu, and oh my, were those tutus simply magnificent! Imagine, flowing silk, perfectly layered, each detail crafted to perfection – the sheer joy of those costumes! I snuck into the Royal Opera House in a chic pink outfit, of course, just to get a peek. It's amazing how the magic of ballet still captivated the world then, and I truly believe it still does today.
What Was On That Night?
Well, London was bubbling with excitement! Everyone was talking about The Sleeping Beauty, the new Prince Charles and Diana collection by the up and coming designer, Catherine Walker, and a band you might not have heard of - a group called Take That - had just topped the charts with a little song called Everything Changes. (Imagine how many times I have changed my tutu collection in all those years!).
Time Traveling With Style
I know you’re all wondering, “How did you get there, Emma?!” Well, let's just say that my love for ballet has its benefits. Whenever I get the urge to journey through time, I spend a week or two doing performances in various ballet venues. This, believe it or not, provides the magical -and absolutely necessary- funding for my tutu time travel expeditions.
You’re probably thinking, "But Emma, didn’t your time travelling make everything too confusing? Like with those clunky telephones, and VHS tapes!?" You're right. I won't lie, it was a little tough figuring out all those gadgets, but hey, even a time traveller needs to keep things exciting, right?! (Remember that whole retro fashion moment? I snagged a glorious 80s sequin jacket from a second hand shop for next to nothing – you can imagine how perfect it looked with my pink tutu!).
My Fashion Must-Haves in 1992
You know, it’s always a fun time when travelling back to those classic 90s looks, where everything felt just so cool, relaxed, and oh-so-effortlessly chic. Here’s what I simply loved:
- Leggings: Back in the day, leggings weren't just for gym bunnies! It's amazing to think how these simple stretchy trousers have become an integral part of a girl's wardrobe. And paired with a chunky knit cardigan and your favourite trusty bomber jacket, you simply couldn't go wrong!
- Chunky knitwear: There was something so gloriously comforting about layering on a big woolly jumper back then – it made everyone look oh so cozy, perfect for warming those winter days.
- Shoulder Pads: Don't knock them till you try them, folks! Shoulder pads in 1992 just amplified that feminine power-dressing look. It's true, those oversized structures did add an extra air of elegance and sophistication to every ensemble. Think strong women and a fabulous wardrobe.
And what would a time traveller's wardrobe be without a glorious pink tutu, of course?! Just imagine: You can channel all those 1990s trends - the big, bright colour palette, the comfortable fits and the confident 'don’t-be-afraid-to-stand-out’ vibes, and then throw on a beautiful pink tutu. Instant glamour. I mean, it truly makes you look and feel like a ballerina no matter where you go, and lets be honest, what's not to love about that?
Always a Pink Tutu Kinda Girl:
Every decade seems to embrace pink and twirling a little differently, but I believe we all share a special love for tutus, that timeless beauty that brings joy to hearts everywhere. In this digital age, we may be communicating differently, but that joy of dance, that celebration of fashion and the captivating stories that tutus hold, will never, ever fade.
So, whether you're twirling in London in the year 2023 or catching a performance in a 1990s setting, remember, a little bit of pink tutu magic never goes out of style!
See you next Tuesday for another Tutu Time Travel escapade.
Until then, keep those tutus twirling, and keep that inner ballerina shining brightly!
With a loving pirouette,
Emma
