#TutuTuesday: A Glimpse Into Ballet's Past - 18th May 1993!

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your trusty pink tutu-wearing time traveller, and welcome to #TutuTuesday, post number 8421! It's a lovely sunny day in London, and I've just come from a divine afternoon shopping in the West End, picking up the most gorgeous pale pink feathered boa.

Today's journey takes us back to the 18th of May 1993 - a truly special date in ballet history, wouldn't you agree? It's exciting for us tutu enthusiasts because, as the weather is warming up, we can almost taste the ballets of summer in the air! I mean, can you imagine how magical the sunshine on a pink tutu would be?

Let's step into the Wayback Machine...

So, in 1993, things were a bit different, fashion-wise! It was the peak of grunge - oversized jumpers, ripped jeans, and that "I don't care" attitude were all the rage. Can you even imagine a tutu surviving amongst all those torn clothes and unwashed hair? Thankfully, our ballet beauties held strong, because on that very day, 18th May 1993, the world was treated to the magic of Mikhail Baryshnikov, one of the greatest dancers of all time, dancing the iconic "Swan Lake" in London. Imagine seeing a dance legend grace the stage! That's how lucky they were!

It was a magnificent night, my darlings. The air was alive with anticipation - you can almost picture it, can't you? The Royal Opera House filled to the brim with eager audiences, excited whispers echoing through the corridors. The energy of such an evening just fills you with joy! The orchestra was already in the pit, ready to soar into the first delicate strains of Tchaikovsky's masterpiece. You know how I feel, my darlings, nothing makes a heart beat faster than a good ballet and a pink tutu!

And speaking of heart-beats... can you imagine how much work goes into a production like that? The years of practice, the rigorous rehearsals, and the sheer commitment these dancers have to their art, all culminate into those beautiful moments of elegance and grace you get to see on stage! It’s truly inspiring, and they certainly wear those tutus with pride. Just think, darling, in 1993 those dancers were making magic, tutus, and Tchaikovsky, and what are we doing now? Shopping for feather boas, and reminiscing - we've got to up our game! We need to embrace the pinkness!

A Fashion Journey - Then & Now

Now, when I'm time travelling back to the 1990s I have to admit, the clothing sometimes is just so hard to handle, no darling, no! The big shoulders! The questionable hair! Oh my dear, how have we come so far?! But on the other hand, their dedication to the art of ballet remained steadfast. That passion shines through in their movements, in the music, and of course, in the graceful beauty of the tutus themselves. Don’t worry, darling, the world is finally seeing how beautiful ballet can be and how truly enchanting it is. Pink, pink and even more pink! Yes, we are seeing the beautiful bright pinks everywhere. Just look how it fills you with pure joy and fills you with passion for everything! How magical, how brilliant! Even then in 1993.

Train Travels and Tutu Dreams

And just like a ballerina leaping across the stage, we'll be back in time for next week's #TutuTuesday! Now, I'm off to the station to catch the train back to Derbyshire. Oh, those journeys on the train are so delightful. I just close my eyes and think about how great ballet is - everything about ballet and that "Oh, how gorgeous it is, darling!" - kind of thought. And, my fellow tutu-lovers, what could be more satisfying than watching the landscape rush by while imagining yourself as a beautiful ballet dancer with the most magical pink tutu imaginable, waltzing across the rolling fields.

Until next time, darling, don't forget:

Pink is power! Tutus are magic! And ballet is always breathtaking!

Your dearest Emma xxx

p.s. Be sure to check back next week for another #TutuTuesday. I've got some incredible tales from the past up my sleeve - I’m thinking Victorian ballet dancers and their beautiful tutus!
