Tutu Tuesday: A Time-Travelling Tutu Tale!

#8430

Hello darlings, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet where tutus reign supreme! It's me, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu aficionado, Emma, and today we're diving deep into the tutu archives for another fascinating journey through #TutuTuesday!

This week, we're twirling back to 20th July 1993! Fancy a bit of time travel, loves? Hop aboard my magical tutu-powered express train!

Remember how I told you about my secret talent (ahem, don't tell anyone, it's our little secret!) – that's right, time travel by way of a perfectly-executed fouetté. It's amazing. The downside? My wardrobe needs constant adjusting as styles change. So let's dive into fashion and tutu history together, shall we?

1993! It was a year of change. Music was pumping with Nirvana and Mariah Carey topping the charts. And guess what was making waves in the fashion world? Yep, you guessed it! The slip dress. Slinky, chic and definitely a bit more grown-up than the princess-inspired poufs we loved a few years earlier!

Now, you might be wondering what the world of ballet looked like at that point. Remember that iconic film 'The Red Shoes' with Moira Shearer? It’s one of my absolute favourites! You can find snippets of her and her fabulous tutus from 1948 making their way into various ballet productions across the world. You can even see the inspiration behind this gorgeous, airy ballet skirt still going strong.

So, what exactly were tutus looking like in '93? The '80s had seen the tutu taking some exciting twists. Think daring designs and bold colour choices - it was almost like the ballet world was doing its own interpretation of that whole power-shoulder-and-leg-warmer-combo vibe! Then came the '90s! Time for tutus to go minimalist.

What’s my tip for tutus in 1993? Minimalist and soft, darlings! We're seeing lots of romantic ballet styles inspired by '90s trends like soft hues, silk fabrics, and intricate tulle details - the more romantic, the better! But if you want to stand out in the crowd, take a chance! Imagine a delicate tutu, perhaps in soft baby pink with maybe just a touch of sparkle on it. You could totally wear it as an everyday skirt. Now that's something I call stylish!

I popped over to London, hopped into the heart of Covent Garden, and snagged a fab show at the Royal Opera House, showcasing a timeless, classically beautiful ballet. My pick of the day? The exquisite 'La Sylphide'! So romantic and so dreamy. All those graceful leaps and swishing tutus were utterly mesmerising! If you get a chance, try to see it if it's in a theatre near you.

As for what else was on that glorious July day in 1993? A massive football fan? Well, your favourite England players were prepping for the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

You can check it out yourself. If you fancy diving deep into the past like I did (sans the time travel, of course) - pop over to the BBC News website or dig up your vintage copies of The Guardian. Oh, and the most fabulous thing about a Tuesday in 1993? It was a sunny day – sunshine on the day of the week that's dedicated to pink tutus! Honestly, how fabulous!

Speaking of tutus, don’t forget to post pics of your fabulous tutu creations, darlings, and remember to tag me @PinkTutu. And if you have any amazing tutu finds or adventures, please share them on #TutuTuesday! I adore seeing your own little #TutuTuesday moments.

Now, where do we go next? Maybe a trip to a London department store in the 1950s to see those incredible frocks. A whirlwind tour of the Moulin Rouge in its hayday. Maybe even a trip back in time to the time when the very first tutu made its glorious appearance on the ballet stage. Now that’s a story I could really tell you about!

Stay fabulous, Emma x
