#TutuTuesday: A Blast from the Past! 🩰
Hey gorgeous girly-girls, it's your favourite pink-loving ballerina, Emma, back with another blast from the past for our #TutuTuesday ballet tutu history!
This week we're twirling back to December 14th, 1993! Get your time travel shoes ready, we're going on a whirlwind adventure!
You know me, I love my pink tutus! They just make me feel so confident and twirly, like I could take on the world in a swirl of fabric. And speaking of taking on the world, I have to tell you all about what's going on in the ballet world on this particular date. I’m always up for an excuse for a ballet performance – after all, it’s not just about the beautiful costumes, it's about the emotions, the artistry, and the way it makes your heart sing.
This week I decided to use my time travelling skills to experience ballet performances in the centre of the ballet world: New York City! As you all know, New York is always buzzing with excitement, especially for things as magical as ballet!
My Day in the City
So what's on December 14th, 1993, in New York City? Let me tell you, it's a pretty extraordinary day!
First things first, I made sure I found the cutest little pink travel dress with matching sparkly ballerina shoes to wear on my journey to New York. You see, travelling by train to the Big Apple always gives me time to sit and people-watch and think up all the places I might want to visit on my trip. And my fellow passengers – everyone from sharp-suited businessmen to trendy students – seem mesmerized by the magical twirling pink cloud I become every time I catch their eyes. The more glances I get the more my confidence in pink tutus grows!
Then there’s the shopping… Oh, the shopping! I've got my eyes on the prettiest tutu, all in silk and tulle. I just have to have it! The feeling of a perfect tutu against my skin - nothing beats it! New York is always bursting with fashion – but you all know how much I love a good vintage find too. And imagine my excitement when I stumbled across a boutique on a tiny back street crammed with amazing tutus. Oh the joy! They weren't your average, boring, white tutus, though. They were all different colors, styles and shapes – pink of course! (A girl has to stay true to her brand). But these tutus had something else. A special charm I’d never seen before. Some had bows and ribbons. Some had glitter and beading. It was heaven. I could spend hours in this shop - hours!
The best part? I’ve got just the perfect thing planned for the evening…
It’s time for some live theatre!
New York City Ballet at the New York State Theater, the most magical and gorgeous space. I love that there’s always a buzz around this theatre. And it’s always about the most incredible stories on the stage, brought to life through beautiful dancing.
But here's what makes December 14th, 1993, so special! The New York City Ballet is performing George Balanchine's “Jewels" – a celebration of ballet's grace and artistry.
Oh my gosh! “Jewels” is the most stunning performance. Imagine sparkling emeralds and the brilliance of diamonds brought to life in a ballet. Talk about mesmerizing! It's truly a spectacle that will leave you speechless and craving for more. It's going to be an extravaganza, full of colour, emotion, and exquisite choreography. It will truly leave my toes tapping and my soul shimmering with joy.
Why It Matters
It’s shows like these that remind us that ballet has such a unique power. This piece showcases a timeless beauty that goes beyond fashion trends. It celebrates movement, art, and the stories we tell with our bodies. I just know this will be one for the books!
The best thing about this journey? Sharing it with you! Because you all know I can’t leave without my fellow tutus enthusiasts. So tell me, what’s your favorite part of ballet? Do you have a special piece you just love? I always want to hear from you in the comments below. Let’s chat all things twirling and tulle together!
