Hey darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where every Tuesday we celebrate the beautiful, twirling world of the tutu. This week, Iām taking you on a train ride back in time ā all the way to January 31st, 1995. Put on your fanciest pink tutu (or borrow mine!), grab a cuppa, and settle in, because today's a real treat!
As I was flipping through my vintage fashion magazines from the archives ā I mean, you have to do your research for the blog, donāt you? ā I stumbled upon an absolute gem. A photoshoot featuring a stunning ballerina in a white tutu, her hair perfectly styled, captured mid-pirouette. Oh, how it reminded me of a beautiful evening at the Royal Opera House!
But it was the article accompanying the shoot that really caught my eye. You see, back in 1995, there was a bit of a āballet revivalā going on! Classical ballet was becoming all the rage, thanks to dazzling new productions, incredible dancers, andā¦well, tutus!
Can you believe there was a time when tutus weren't as popular as they are today? Honestly, I can hardly imagine a world without these fabulous frills! It's a wonder it even happened! Perhaps itās because people thought ballet was stuffy or outdated. Or maybe it was the glittery makeup that put people off!
Whatever the reason, 1995 was all about bringing back the magic of the tutu. Everyone wanted a piece of the ballerinaās charm. And thatās how I ended up in London for my very first ballet show!
I remember the thrill of stepping onto the platform at St Pancras station, the anticipation buzzing in the air as I clutched my ticket, practically bursting with excitement! And oh, that beautiful Victorian train, a carriage full of fellow theatre-goers in their finest finery! Even now, I get butterflies just thinking about it. There's something so utterly romantic about arriving at Covent Garden by train.
Stepping inside the theatre, a sense of magic took over. My breath hitched at the first glimpse of the grand chandeliers, twinkling like stars, and the scarlet velvet seatingā¦ I was utterly mesmerized! The dancers were incredible, their movements effortless, their expressions filled with passion, the beautiful costumes and choreography making me weep tears of joy ā well, perhaps it was the emotion and all that glitter.
The whole experience left me spellbound. And since then, I've become a bit of a ballerina enthusiast myself. You know me, all about the tutu, even if I have to make it myself ā don't get me started on how many rolls of tulle I've purchased over the years! Thankfully, they have wonderful craft stores on my usual train route.
Now, let's have a peek at some other fun things happening in January 1995! Remember Spice Girls? They were releasing their first single "Wannabe", which went on to become a global phenomenon, and they are STILL around, the best Spice Girlsā reunion ever (except perhaps that recent tour which was AMAZING - see how much things haven't changed?). Not only did the music scene take a turn, so did fashion. Fashion designers started using tulle and layers in their clothing and even introduced ballerina-inspired ballet flats for everyday wear!
1995, I must say, was a fabulously tutu-licious year! And who knows whatās coming up next week? Maybe Iāll take you back to the Renaissance era ā think tights, ruffles, and perhaps a tiny cameo appearance of the first tutu. Now wouldn't that be a delightful surprise!
In the meantime, darling, be sure to tell me about your favorite tutu moments! I love to hear all about them! You can reach me on social media or in the comments below.
