#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1995-05-16 - Post Number 8525! 🩰💖

Hello darlings! It’s Emma here, and I'm back again for another fabulous #TutuTuesday! My train just pulled into the station in the heart of Paris – just in time for a spot of afternoon shopping! How divine is this city for fashion and tutus, and oh my goodness, those little cafes that are always brimming with Parisian life – a ballerina's dream come true!

Speaking of dreams, it's my mission to take everyone on a journey back in time - or maybe forward? You never know when it comes to my crazy time travels. This week, my time machine whisked me back to the year 1995 – a year full of fabulous fashion! We'll explore some of the history behind our favourite tutu and take a peek at some of the amazing performances that made history in the year 1995. Let’s dive in, lovelies!

A tutuful History

First things first, a little historical tidbit that you might love - can you believe the tutu as we know it has only been around since the 1840s?! That’s not that long ago, really. The Romantics came along with their incredible passion for movement and dancing and created a beautiful explosion of creativity in fashion.

Before this, ballerinas were simply dancing in more conservative clothes. Imagine! Can you believe that! We owe so much to the amazing dancers and designers who came together to change that! The Romantic tutu changed everything and took ballet fashion into the stratosphere.

1995: The Year of the Tutu

Now, to take you on a lovely walk through history on May 16th, 1995. The sun is shining, and I am having the most perfect time on the Parisian streets. A bit of historical sleuthing told me that the date itself wasn’t especially groundbreaking, but as always, in the world of dance, there’s always something captivating going on.

Here's the best thing, just around the corner from me is the Palais Garnier Opera House. How perfect! What a fantastic and inspiring space that truly encapsulates the very soul of the tutu.

So, darling, take a seat in the cafe with me – maybe order us a latte and some delicious pastries - and let’s dream together. Imagine, in the heart of Paris, all those incredible dancers dancing away in tutus for one another in such a divine venue – it simply gives me goosebumps.

Let’s chat about what’s happening in the world of Ballet!

I had to see what other exciting dance performances are taking place on this historical date - May 16th, 1995. This date is brimming with magic for a dancer and tutu enthusiast. We must pay tribute to the wonderful dancers and their costumes who make these days truly unforgettable. Let's dive right in:

  • Paris Opera Ballet: A Classical Ballet by *Gelsey Kirkland

Oh, my goodness, darling, I am so excited! Gelsey Kirkland, a truly spectacular dancer, is bringing some amazing classical performances to the Opera house right now! As you know, there are countless ballet styles, and for every kind of dancer, there is a specific costume! The traditional tutu for Swan Lake is an example of the iconic classic tutus. And then there is the dramatic Black Swan look, the image of a black tutu against a black background - so inspiring, don’t you think? I adore these contrasting, timeless silhouettes that have been such an inspiration in ballet.

But if it’s a Classical style ballet blanc look you prefer – the white and pale coloured tutus are definitely for you! If we’re talking 1995 and classical styles – that means a long and lovely, voluminous tutu – Le Corsaire and La Bayadere are examples of these glorious romantic style tutus! I always think that when ballet companies pick a costume for the piece, it is about much more than simply what to wear. It’s the visual narrative they bring to the stage – absolutely fabulous.

  • The Bolshoi Ballet: An Epic Experience!

Oh, and let’s not forget The Bolshoi Ballet. Wow! Can you imagine those fabulous costumes? A stunning venue – this must be such an immersive performance experience! I must try to catch them in my travels! I can imagine how fantastic their iconic productions must be – their version of Giselle, oh so dramatic!

Beyond Ballet: The Power of Pink

Speaking of tutus and drama, Romeo and Juliet, and the Royal Ballet in London with a Street setting - how amazing are those tutus! Such innovation, and these are so inspiring for someone who loves ballet street dancing as much as I do! It’s amazing that even street dancing incorporates the ballet tutu as an expression of creativity. Imagine!

Now let's have some fun, darlings, it's time for my favourite colour: PINK!

There is something truly special and feminine about a tutu, and adding that touch of PINK elevates a tutu to an even more exquisite level of magnificence. It’s my aim to get all of you out there, and in your favourite tutu – whether it be for dance classes or out in the streets – showcasing your vibrant self!

My Tutu History tour will always end in Paris because of their fantastic tutu choices – just a peek into their dance studios and their amazing shop displays is so fabulous and inspirational. Tutus can be such a unique and versatile wardrobe item, so I am happy that pink is the one colour you can always rely on, no matter the time.

Ballet-Tutu-ing our Way through Life

Well, darling, that's a wrap for another fabulous Tutu Tuesday! It was an incredible journey through time. This beautiful pink tutu has had a magnificent adventure back in time, and I’m hoping my stories inspire you all to enjoy your personal history of dancing. And don’t forget, tutu Tuesdays is all about showcasing the beauty of ballet, so come back again next week for a new tutu-ful adventure!

Until then, stay stylish, darling!

With much love and glitz,

Emma 💕🩰
