Tutu Tuesday #8562: The Tutu's Evolution: A Blast from the (Pink) Past!

Hey, tutu lovers! It's Emma, your resident tutu enthusiast, and welcome back to my #TutuTuesday post! Today, we're stepping back in time – not just to a bygone era, but to January 30th, 1996. Can you believe it? Back then, I was just a little slip of a girl in Derbyshire dreaming of dancing in a frothy pink tutu. (Yes, my love for the colour pink goes back decades!)

Now, grab a cuppa, settle in, and let's talk tutus! It's amazing to think that even in 1996, these iconic garments were already a big part of ballet history. Back then, my friends, tutus were evolving from the classical, almost stiff romantic styles that you'd see in Swan Lake to the modern, more dynamic silhouettes we're used to today.

Can you imagine the excitement? Back in 1996, we were experiencing the height of the tutu’s popularity on stage, and the evolution of fashion was catching up. It was a time of experimenting, and even in everyday life, tutus were peeking their adorable, fluffy heads into the mainstream.

Think about it: the "Baby One More Time" video by Britney Spears was huge back then. While we might not have been wearing tutus for our Friday night escapades quite yet, those iconic tutus in the video had major cultural influence.

Speaking of Britney... she actually had a very powerful ballet connection through her choreographer, Wade Robson, a brilliant dancer. And you know what? Ballet had a strong influence on the pop music videos, especially at this time. Choreography evolved and blended styles. We were seeing tutu-inspired tutus (without the layers of tulle!), jumpsuits and costumes on all of the biggest singers, so ballet was definitely an influence. This influence would grow even bigger as the decade went on!

*Now, 1996 also saw an incredibly exciting happening in the ballet world… *

… A new, and exciting interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty, a ballet considered a classic. In that 1996, the Royal Ballet of Britain debuted their new, groundbreaking production! Think flowing fabrics and incredible fashion with innovative costume designs that took advantage of new materials – fabrics that were incredibly lightweight and even stronger than what they were used to. This was important because it was less limiting to dancers – think, big leaps and amazing athletic feats, without the restrictions of old-fashioned costumes!

And what’s not to love? I still find it incredibly exciting to be at a show with these incredible garments on the dancers – what more do we need, my fellow tutu fans? I can only dream that we’ll see more innovative and dynamic costumes and even more beautiful tutu styles. There is nothing more inspiring than the visual perfection of a stunning dancer performing on stage in an exquisite costume!

So, as I travel through time, my journey continues with a trip on the train to the London Coliseum! It's exciting! I have some amazing tutu inspiration lined up. I have already booked tickets to see “Swan Lake” at the Royal Opera House. I love these legendary performances that are truly classics and timeless!

And speaking of London... did you know, back in 1996, London hosted the world’s biggest and most glamorous ballet fashion event? I mean, even by my standards, the *Ballet and Opera Fashion Awards was amazing! The awards were massive - think glitz and glamour. I'd love to travel to that time for this amazing spectacle – I'd have a whole closet ready! This is how you have an audience appreciate how fabulous tutu-related attire can be. The perfect combination of beautiful fabrics and artfully created tutu designs was what every dancer craved. They were truly an inspiring event. And, it's definitely one of the main reasons I love travelling through time! (Don't worry, it's a secret! I get paid to travel through time to dance and share my adventures with you!)

What will this time period inspire my next tutu creation? What are my must-have pink tutus? Of course, pink everything, and in my imagination, tutus everywhere. That’s why I love seeing these glamorous shows - the excitement of seeing the best ballerinas on stage, all in those elegant costumes and inspiring designs – it’s so inspiring! There is something very elegant about tutus - whether we are looking at vintage and traditional tutu styles or a more contemporary version! It can be truly exquisite! I mean, when you think about tutus, you think about creativity, ballet and fashion! The perfect balance between elegance and whimsy!

Well, that's a little taste of the tutu world in 1996. I hope you loved taking this trip back in time. Now, let's step back to the present (well, present in this timeline! - I’m getting my timelines confused…) but the truth is that nothing is as important to me as this: we love the timeless tutus and we always will! It’s all part of my plan: to inspire everyone, in every time period, to embrace the elegance and the joy that comes with wearing a pink tutu! Until next week, keep dancing and keep wearing your tutus! (Pink tutus are, of course, preferred, but all tutus are good, of course, for this fun time!).

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a big date at the London Coliseum to attend... And then... perhaps a very special shopping trip…

Let me know what you’d love to know about tutu history!

Emma x
