#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post 8566 🩰✨

Hey there, tutu lovers! Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time traveller, back with another installment of #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History! Today, we're venturing to February 27th, 1996, a glorious day brimming with possibilities. Now, before we whisk ourselves back in time, let me just tell you, a trip back to the mid-90s is just about the best kind of time travel a ballerina could wish for. Think, big, fluffy, pouffy tulle skirts! Grunge meets glitter! And don't even get me started on the music. It's just fabulous, my darlings!

But, we're here for the tutu history, aren't we? Now, the 1990s were a real turning point for ballet costumes. There was a real push for sleekness, for practicality, but, bless their little cotton socks, there was still room for a whole heap of glamour and twirling! Tutus, you see, were going through a bit of an evolution, a renaissance if you will, drawing inspiration from everything from Victorian corsetry to the sleekness of 20th-century ballet pioneers. It's a glorious time to be studying ballet!

Now, back to 27th February, 1996. What did the world of tutu wear have in store for us? Well, we have to think back to where ballet really flourished at that time – Paris and London, my loves. Those iconic theatres and companies were really pushing the boundaries of costume design. Let's talk Paris first. I can imagine a hush falling over the Paris Opera House as a graceful, ethereal ballerina steps out in a soft, diaphanous tutu, all wispy and dreamy, maybe with a bit of sparkly embroidery. The Parisian ballerinas, oh, they really were known for their refined, elegant style, and the tutus matched this to perfection.

But what about London? Oh, London, home of the Royal Ballet, was full of more exciting experimentation. Remember the days of tutus getting bold and brave, pushing the boundaries of traditional designs? That's what you were seeing in 1996, tutus taking on more of a dramatic feel, almost gothic at times! Imagine a deep velvet tutu with layers of lace or intricate embroideries. It was so striking and glamorous. You were seeing a fusion of historical styles – nods to Victorian opulence alongside twentieth-century design, all spun together in a tutu of sheer artistry and creativity. It was truly exciting to see these daring new interpretations in a classic medium, like tutus.

I’d have loved to have seen this with my own eyes, in the theatre of course, or even to catch some dancers backstage at the Royal Opera House – my imagination is running wild, all velvet, pearls, and glittering lace! Maybe we’ll pop back on another #TutuTuesday – London's calling me back for another whirl!

Now, while London and Paris are the go-to destinations for all things ballet, don’t underestimate the impact of ballet companies elsewhere. Remember the American Ballet Theatre, where tulle takes centre stage! I'd imagine seeing those graceful ballerinas gliding across the stage in voluminous tutus - the fabric swirling with every twirl, the design, classic yet contemporary! Ballet is a global language, you see, and the tutu is its most powerful expression. It's not just a costume; it's an emblem of artistry, tradition, and magic.

To bring a bit of that magic into our own lives, why don’t we channel those early 1990s vibes, those iconic silhouettes? Grab your favourite tulle skirt and add a hint of glitter, a touch of sparkle, or maybe even a simple, chic belt. Why not try a tulle skirt paired with a simple blouse, perhaps in a floral pattern, or maybe a little velvet top for some classic chic? Don't forget that tulle skirt isn't just for ballet anymore! Pair it with a knit jumper and boots for a look that’s both classic and comfortable. Oh, my darlings, the possibilities are endless!

You'll look positively fabulous - and believe me, that's a look we can all get behind. It’s all about confidence and embracing those fabulous twirls - remember, even if it’s just twirling around in the comfort of your own home!

So there you have it, a glimpse into the world of tutu history on February 27th, 1996! A date full of style, glamour and dancing. Remember, we're all about spreading the joy of ballet, from the theatre to your street style. Don't forget to share your own pink tutu looks!

Until next week, twirl on, my dears, twirl on!

Yours in tulle, Emma 🩰💖

PS: You’ll see this week’s #TutuTuesday post about the 27th of February 1996 is going to feature lots of photos! I’m talking full on fabulous ballerina pictures – that's because I’ll be traveling to that very day this week. A ballet performance at the Paris Opera House (that’s one way to make some cash for those time travel flights!), and then I’m on a Eurostar train straight to London, hoping to see a bit of the fashion, a bit of the Royal Ballet, and perhaps even some historical costume inspiration! Don't miss it – I'll be posting plenty of pics on my social media all week!
