Hello my darling dance devotees! It's Emma here, your resident Tutu Tuesday time-travelling fashionista, bringing you another fabulous flutter through the history of ballet's most iconic garment - the tutu!
This week, we're waltzing our way back to the 17th of December 1996, a time when the world was abuzz with excitement about...well, I'll get to that in a bit! But first, let's get those pink tutu-clad spirits soaring with a bit of historical fashion flair.
A Whirlwind of Tutus:
Now, as you all know, tutus haven't always been the glorious symbol of graceful flight they are today. They've undergone a grand transformation, a bit like a caterpillar morphing into a stunning butterfly!
In the early days, ballerinas were, let's be honest, quite constricted in their voluminous skirts, making them look like rather awkward swans trapped in a cage of fabric. Then, the romantic ballet era brought about a change. Delicate, floaty tulle started making its appearance, revolutionising how ballerinas moved, letting their steps flow with elegance and fluidity.
By the 1990s, tutus were firmly in their modern heyday, showcasing the skill and athleticism of dancers like never before. It's no wonder these delicate garments have become such an enduring symbol of dance!
My Trip to 17th December 1996:
For this Tutu Tuesday, I journeyed by train to... wait for it, New York City! It was quite a rush, with the wind whipping through my hair as the sleek carriages whisked me past those iconic skyscrapers.
Upon my arrival, I went straight to a fabulous fashion boutique (all those twirly skirts always require an elegant outfit!), and then, the real excitement started! On that very day, one of the greatest modern dancers, Mikhail Baryshnikov, was showcasing a special performance at Lincoln Center!
Oh, the excitement! The anticipation was positively electric, and the show itself was truly awe-inspiring. Seeing him glide across the stage, effortlessly bringing the magic of the story to life, was truly spellbinding.
This kind of performance makes me want to be in the spotlight myself, showing off some elegant moves and fabulous pink tutus.
But let's get back to tutus...
Back in 1996, the world of dance was full of thrilling moments! From captivating ballet performances like the one I attended, to cutting-edge contemporary dance troupes like DV8 Physical Theatre and Nederlands Dans Theater, ballet was as vibrant as ever!
A Tutus-Inspired Outfit:
To honour this truly iconic date in dance history, I put together an ensemble fit for a true ballerina, with a touch of that dazzling New York energy!
My foundation? A delicate pink tulle skirt, naturally, with its frothy tiers cascading over a vibrant, coral red silk blouse, its sheen a beautiful echo of the shimmering stage lights.
I paired this with elegant ivory stilettos, adding a touch of New York chic, and accessorized with a dainty, pearl necklace that gently shimmered with every twirl. And, of course, a pop of colour in my lip, a bright shade of coral matching my blouse, for that ultimate diva touch!
