Hello lovelies! Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina, ready to take you on a trip down memory lane! As it's #TutuTuesday, it's only right we delve into the history of the fabulous tulle skirt, the star of the show!
Today, December 31st, 1996, the world is buzzing with New Year's Eve excitement, but for us ballet-loving bunch, it's another chance to appreciate the graceful beauty of a classic dancewear essential: the tutu. So, grab a glass of bubbly (or perhaps a hot chocolate if you're a bit younger), slip on your fanciest ballet shoes, and let's explore!
(A little confession here, dear readers, I love traveling by train! I always find the rhythm of the wheels and the countryside flashing past makes the perfect atmosphere for thinking about fashion. Plus, they usually have fantastic cake shops on the platform, and a lovely hot cup of tea is a must on any train journey!)
Before we dive into the year 1996, let's set the scene, darling! The year is 1996, and ballet, as we know it, is already well established. From the grand theaters of Paris and New York to the cosy, wooden-floored studios tucked away in English towns like mine (a little bit of Derbyshire you know!), the allure of ballet and its glorious tutus shines bright! We’re in the middle of the Romantic Era of Ballet - full of beautiful, flowing lines, exquisite music, and an appreciation for stories brought to life on stage. Think ‘Swan Lake’, ‘The Sleeping Beauty’, and ‘Giselle’, and you’ve got the vibe!
Now, imagine it: You’re in a grand theatre. The plush velvet seats are sinking under the weight of fashionable ladies and gentlemen in their finest attire, their jewels sparkling in the dimly lit hall. The orchestra warms up, a beautiful waltz tune fills the air, and then – bam! A ballerina steps out onto the stage in a majestic, billowing tutu, ready to tell her story!
*So, back to 1996! Let's think tutus. *
The year 1996 saw some brilliant ballet productions! Imagine the elegant swirl of the Sugar Plum Fairy’s tutu in The Nutcracker - the quintessential Christmas ballet! There's always such a joyous, magical feeling when those tutus twirl under the stage lights. Just picture those little girls mesmerized in the audience, imagining themselves leaping through the air, dressed as ballerinas too. You can see them whispering to their mummies, "I want a tutu like that!" A perfect gift to wish for! And don’t get me started on the Swan Lake Odette, with those flowing white tutus - I’m transported to a different world with every movement!
But, the year 1996 was more than just those grand classical ballets, darling. The world of ballet was always changing. In that year, contemporary ballet was starting to take the world by storm, a more modern take on the form with expressive movement and an emphasis on storytelling. Of course, even with these modern changes, tutus were still the stars of the show. It wasn’t about having a traditional tutu or not, it was all about using this wonderful piece of clothing to communicate an emotion, to give life to a character, or to inspire the heart!
(I am so lucky to be a ballerina and to live in this incredible world. Ballet has brought me all sorts of amazing experiences and helped me find friends from all over! I always say, there’s nothing like a dance class to help you shake off a stressful day! And honestly, you can't go wrong with a nice twirl in a fabulous pink tutu!)
The tutu is about so much more than just a fancy dance skirt, darling. It's an iconic symbol of feminine strength, elegance, and beauty, it tells stories and transports us to another place, it sparks joy in both performers and viewers, and yes, it is simply delightful! And this Tuesday, as you grab your little princess by the hand for your yearly ballet recital, or slip on your favorite ballet flat to head to your evening class, just remember - the magic of a tutu can transport you to any time!
And now, let’s finish our #TutuTuesday journey in style, with a fashion focus. Of course, no #TutuTuesday blog is complete without a quick look at the current fashion trends. Today, tutus are EVERYWHERE! In magazines, on runways, at festivals, on street style bloggers... it’s clear that the love of tutus extends beyond the stage! From chic ballerina flats to tutus repurposed as chic maxi skirts, we’re seeing that playful, whimsical ballerina-inspired style take centre stage in the world of fashion! I just love the fact that tutus, traditionally seen in the realm of ballet, are now spreading their magic and finding their way into everyday life, showing everyone just how fun and powerful a little bit of pink can be! It makes my heart dance! 💖🩰
Don't forget, lovelies! If you want to step out of your comfort zone and embrace the power of the pink tutu, be bold! Embrace the dance in your heart and twirl on into a brighter future! I hope you’ll all be joining me for more of my #TutuTuesday blogs.
See you next week! Emma xxx
